Ok....Here is whats on the table for grabs guys. 04 GTO complete motor, harness, PCM anything I need from the car. Its a rearend hit so everything I need is good. Best part is she only has 2180 miles....Yes, I said 2180 miles. Should I grab this or hold out for a 6.0 ? Im having a real hard time not grabing this up. Whats the verdict?

Grab it. it's a 5.7 and makes 365 hp and 385 tq so it's only a 15 lb/ft difference from the 6.0. You can upgrade it if you want later. All the LS motors respond to upgrades well. Yes, it is a LS1 motor so it's an older generation but...
If you are looking for a budget motor, get a truck iron block 6.0. They are the cheapest to find. Car Craft or Hot Rod took one changed a cam and made 550 hp with a carb. So the power potential is there. You can find truck engines for under a grand. Go to LS1Tech.com and start perusing to figure out what engine is best for you. It is one of the best websites I have found that addresses LS motors. The LS3/L92's are the newest versions and probably the best way to go if you have the money. They will not be cheap out of the junk yard but will probably be the most fun should get one installed. |

GET THE 04 GTO!!!! Man you want it. The motor is the same as the 02+ LS1. It was first put in the 02 Fbodies. The only thing with the GTO is the harness is alot more complicated. I have done two and could hook you up if you want.
Basically what you want to do with the 04 GTO. Depends on the power level you want, but this is what I would do. First things first the heads are decent heads and switched in 02. The cam needs to go its a truck cam to allow the LS6 manifold to pass emission requirements on this vehicle. Go for a 228R or 232R great cams and can make 400 to close to 500 whp with great low end they pick up around 2000 grand and the LS1 because of architecture starts screaming at around 3000. The next would be tune, I would remove all emissions, delete rear 02's (catalyst efficiency), remove cats and if money permits a new exhaust. I would also get some TSP 5.3L Stage II heads to make it close to about 460 or so rwhp. The stage II will increase compression and flow better. The issues you will run into is fueling issues. A pump and 98 corvette fuel filter/regulator can be purchased from street and performance along with the motor mounts. The PCM will have to be tuned out to get ride of the vats signal. A new dash with compatible gauges will need to be acquired. A fuel pump wire will need to be run to the tank, the BCM will need to be removed from the harness, many of the fuse locations will need to be moved from the front body connector to the rear harness conector. YOu have your work cut out for you my man but you will love it. The motor I did was an 02 LS1 with a 228R cam full emissions delete and tune and i was probably around 380-90 rwhp with a T56. I got 34 on the highway with 3.23's and 19 in the city driving her pretty hard. These motors are usually good to 200+ thousand. I would jump on the GTO, it also allows you lean cruising for better MPG. Also I would tend to recommend the T56, and if auto at the very least a 4L65E but keep in mind if you are doing this and plan on hotrodding it with around 500+hp you cannot be gauranteed that tranny will hold up especially if you launch it sometime. I would go with the 4L80E not much more expensive especially if your friend owns a junk yard and the 4L80E is compatible with the PCM a new cal just needs to be flashed. The differences between GEN III-GEN IV at this point is very little performance wise. The only thing you would really gain performance wise is larger heads and a bigger bore to increase HP. The other changes were mainly for MPG and economy such as cam phasing and DOD. GEN V's will be a different story because of a new jump in technology that will drastically increase the ability for compression especially on alcohol based fuels. I personally wouldn't go over to the LS1Tech website because the vendors over there make ridiculous claims that they cannot back up. To me it seems like the site is all about making people money. A vendor tried telling the website he made 100+ rwhp off a small cam change 220's in an LS3 and an exhaust change. Im sorry but that is the biggest BS every. He then told the website that it was people like me that pollute the internet lol. Then he went on to do a SD tune on a cammed LS1... Kind of funny if you ask me I work at GM and ran his numbers on our analysis software and the engine at the flywheel made 70 more hp. Hmm... BTW you want a MAF tune. I have a MAF tune and use PE to control my LT1 with an LS1 computer making just under 700 whp on a S/C. SD tunes have their place but not many in this world. Factory tunes include them for tip ins when pressure pulses travel back up in the intake and cause some misreadings on the MAF. Not saying all guys are bad there I have just run into a few tuners and vendors who believe they are God themselves and will never return there for advice. I have also been ripped off by two individuals on the forums selling things. Last edited by Radcannon; Yesterday at 11:38 AM. |

Wow Michael....I sure do have my work cut out for me! If your offering to help I will take you up on it! As far as computer/harness stuff Speartech is like 20 minutes away, will I need him? or are you saying you can help me with that? Im not sure what all the abreviations stand for either. I know...I have a lot to learn!

Ya man I would be more than willing to help. Speartech charges right around 700 for your conversion. I just sold my ls1 to a guy who got his harness (for a 68) from street and performance they are great guys and have 99% of what you need.
I can walk you through most of it if you understand wiring and if you cant finish i can finish it up for you. I just finished an 04 harness rework 2 months ago. I usually charge around 400 for a complete rework. What you need to do the harness yourself though is a simple crimping tool, a soldering gun, shrink wrap and some good 3M tape. You will also need your original harness to use the bulkhead connectors at the firewall. Its a great learning process and really shows you what and how the pcm interacts with the rest of the systems and if something goes wrong you should easily be able to trouble shoot. MAF is mass air flow and SD is speed density. MAF is accurate to within 5% as a flow meter and why major automotive companies use it. Even the ZR1 is a MAF tune. The GM PCM whether aussie or US can control the engine fine without a mod to the base tune on a 228 or 232 but you will not get the most power our economy out of a stock tune and it will take a few key cycles and driving for the PCM to hone in on good fueling. It needs to be leaned out a little, rev limiter needs to be raised, you want governor out of it, and you will need to remove vats (security that disables fuel) and possibly change the speed signal and tach signal. If you don't remove vats they make an emulator but its 80 bucks i believe and can be done with a click at any tuning shop that deletes your other signals. I would have had a tune that would have been great for you but i gave it to the guy i just sold my stuff to. Maybe I can get the tune if you go that way. |

Sounds like too good of a deal to pass up since it comes with everything you need and has the ultra low mileage. You're not trying to be King of the Street, right?

LOL...No I dont need to be king of the street, I just want to get my car back on the street! This motor will have plenty of HP with a cam swap for now. I will do some upgrades to it later as funds permit and after I have some fun with it. Thanks Allan..
