Default Gear Ratio

It's been about 7 months since I bought my 67. It's been a blast to drive but the low rear end gear has been getting on my nerves. I have a turbo 350 and the car is screaming at 4,000 rpm at 60 mph. I finally pulled the diff. cover off and determined the 10 bolt has Richmond 4.88 gears. I'm thinking about going to a 3.73, but Im not sure if the car will be boring to drive after that. I have a tired 350 in it, but the long term plan is to put a GMPP 383 in it. This is strictly a street car, I go on alot of rides with my dad, him in his vette and me in the camaro, it's alittle hard to keep up though once we get up to speed. Any advise on gear selection would be great.

Thanks

With stock diameter tires a 3.73 will give you about 3000 rpm at 60mph. A 4.88 bill buzz.

A 3.36 woudl be better for the rides. A 3.73 is still going to spin the engine pretty high at highway speeds. A 3.55 woudl be a compromise. A 3.73 isn't going to be boring.

I love my 3.73 and they arent to awful bad on the highway, I have a Th 350 and 26" tires and im turning about 2600 at 55, and the 3.73s are still plenty fun.

With my 350/TH350 combo. With 3.55 was still pretty hi rpms on the interstate. In the 3000-3500 range. I then dropped in a 700R4. Still have a good hole shot, but run about 2000 rpm on the hiway now.

Ya, an overdrive transmisson is always option, but I would rather save the money and get my motor first.

I just got my car back from the shop. I love the 3.73 gears. It's like a different car but in a good way. Thanks for your input guys 3.73 were a great decision.

I went from 4.56 gears to the 3.73 gears and think they are a good compromise for performance and driveability.
