Default Opening Oil Filter

I was wondering what you guys and gals are using to cut open your oil filters. I know there are tools for sale for this, I found one on CL for 50 bucks used. Any home made ideas that I can use? TIA!

I have a huge pipe/tubing cutter to open them up - works great.

Maybe a dumb question but why would you want to open your oil filter.
Wait, I Know, to see what's inside

To observe what's in the filter, metal shavings from bearings, etc. Not a dumb question by the way.

last time i was at harbor freight i *think* i saw an oil filter cutter, it is prebably pretty cheap if you dont want to fork out the $50 for a used one, and i would imagine it will last a while since you wont be cutting the filters open every day.. hopefully

I thought that was why, I'm been working to hard lack of I figured if you can see metal shavings in the filter it's probable to late. How often do you check and what can you do about it?
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread

It doesn't hurt to take a look inside, just for my peace of mind is all, and I am very curious as well.

most people will check them right after the first start of the engine to make sure everything is ok, and the metal in the oil isnt excessive, which lets them tear the engine down and fix it before it gets worse and destroys stuff

once you do this, it is kinda hard to stop, so most people do it after every oil change
