I used a $20 HF needle scaler. http://www.harborfreight.com/compact...ler-96997.html For the petrified stuff it worked really well - the stuff fell off in chunks. Also great for getting into tight cormers. Elbow grease and a stiff scraper on the rest, followed by wire wheels on an air drill. You will be glad to be done with this job - it is no fun at all. You will want to have the rear and the springs out as well.

Thank Al you are right. This is one nasty job, especially when doing it upside down under the car. The stuff get everywhere!

Thanks Al. Does this toll scratch up the bottom of the car too much. Are those rods made of metal? Are the changeable?

Thanks

If you hold that tool in one place too long it will beat a hole in the metal.

That is not something I am interested in. I am trying to make the underside look better. Have you used this tool before? I have heard of a local guy here who used one, but I have not seen it first hand.

I have done three cars the best way I found like many was a torch paint scraper or putty knife. to remove the most of it. then use a drill with a wire brush and heat the under coating that you did not get off with the scraper while running the wire brush over it look out for flying hot tar and each day throw your cloths away or it will get in the washer and dryer and on the wifes cloths not the fashion statement most wifes wantto make

I hear you Robert. I am using overalls, but the stuff get in your ears and everywhere. I am thinking of getting a ski mask to cover my head.

Here is some progress.

THE TOOLS

THE RESULT

Always looking for advice and better ways to restore this car!

This isn't the type they de-rust Navy ships with - it's a tiny one hand needle scaler. Yes - if you held it in the same place for about a month it would eventually beat a hole through the metal. Hold it at about 45* to the work piece and you'll be fine. The hard stuff falls off. If you do make some tiny nicks hit with a roloc and you'll never notice them.

+1 on the Aircraft paint stripper, get good gloves & eye protection, this stuff is nasty, but melts away undercoating with ease.

I used Kerosene and a high pressure steam cleaner. Floors looked new.

I used a Harbor Freight heat gun and a metal putty knife on my '56 Chevy. This got 99% of the undercoating off. I then sand blasted the underbody before I painted it with epoxy primer. I mixed black and red primer to get a shade of brown primer that is real close to the original.

I used a MBX crud buster does not hurt the metal and is much safer than a wire wheel on a grinder.
