Default Lee 670 vs Lee 800?

Now that I've read every possible post here, pozziracing and lat g site, I have to ask why more guys with BBCs aren't running the Lee 800 box? I called and spoke to Lee today, with my 396 and headers, they recommend I either go with their 800 box or get a big hammer if I decide to go with the 670. Both boxes are 12.7:1, but the 670 is $165 more.

Anyone running a Lee 800? Anyone know if there is a difference of feel between the two boxes? Is the 670 more $$$ because it's just lighter?

Just thought I'd ask before I place the order.

I just installed a 670 in my 67 (small block car) Very nice piece. I went with the 670 over the 800 because the Lee rep stated that it was a little "tighter" than the 800 and that it was the closest thing to a modern rack and pinion feel. May have been a sales pitch... maybe not.. All I know is that I really like it.
I dont think you can go wrong with either one. The have a great product and seem to have a solid industry reputation...

Why do they suggest the 800 over the 670 for you, especially if it's cheaper?

They said 800 is better fit w/bbc and headers. (Shrug)

From my research on the boxes before purchasing.... even though the 670 is smaller unit overall, it does stick out farther in one area... and that area is could easily come in contact with BB headers....

It's Tom and Gail Lee @ Lee's Manufacturing..they are both great and have helped me out tremendously. I've had 2 pumps re-valved/built by them along with using their inserts and a lot of tech help.
Just take their advice and go with Lee's when it comes to high performance street/track steering.

Just got off the phone with Tom Lee. Another advantage to running the 800 if you can and your car has a stock frame...the weight difference when going with a 670 box actually moves the center of gravity "up" so to speak. It removes the 'lower' weight so the car is more top heavy. Even if it's just a very slight amount. The way he put it was "if a guy wins a race with a 670 box, he did it in spite of the box not due to it".

If the 800 fits, your car has a stock frame and you don't just want to spend extra money..use it.
