hi mark. i was mainly concerned about location of date code. macneish maintains that blocks casted after may69 are found on rear of block above flywheel and prior to then, it should be on passenger side of block above freze plug. my car is 12B 68 (69 model yr) and date code is on rear of block and by mcneish records should be on side of block. are there exceptions or this absolutely not a possibility? thx

As far as I know all small blocks used in first gen Camaros have their date codes cast into the top rear of the block on the drivers side and can be seen looking straight down between the distributor and valve cover if you can jam your face in there close enough. Some of the early big blocks have them down by the motor mounts on the passenger side of the blocks, but the vast majority also have them on the top rear face of the block. Do you have a 440 block or a 272 block? 440's were dated down low on the passenger side, the 272 was in the same place until around the first week of January 69 then it moved up on the rear ledge of the block like the small blocks. The 440's were alegedly discontinued around the end of august 68 and the 272's took over after that date, as the supply of 440 blocks was used up.
