I just rebuilt the whole front end with stock components, except 2'' lowering spindles. When i first drove the car the steering wheel was about 1/4 turn off,as car going straight and wheel turning right. Removed pitman arm and moved one spline and its better but still about 1- 1/2 '' turning right when car is going straight. I noticed a spline that was bigger so i think u can only adjust so far. I know i can pull the wheel , but can the alignment shop adjust both tie rod clamps at the same time and get that much adjustment out of the wheel ?
Thank's

That big spline is for proper clocking and should only mate in one spot so I think you may have forced it back on when you moved it one tooth! The way I would go about it is install all the steering and suspension parts, get it aligned properly then re-install the steering wheel so it's straight.

Maybe i did'nt even move it , i did have an 1-3/4'' difference toe- in that i set pretty close while i had the pitman arm off. It sure did'nt feel like i forced it on as i pushed up on the pitman and started the nut by hand. Thanks Dennis !!

The pitman arm/steering box is keyed so that the arm will fit in any of 4 different positions, but only one is correct. As Dennis said, you can"t just move it one tooth.
I'm not sure on 68s, but on 69 the factory steering wheel will only go on in one position. I don't remember for certain, but I recall there being a flat in the splines, and also that little plastic deal for the horn has to go through the hole in the wheel. Your line-up shop will be able to center the wheel for you with the tie rod adjusters.

As the others have said..get your alignment done ASAP.
Replacing just about anything as far as suspension or steering..always get the alignment re-done. They'll set your steering wheel straight too.

It is impossible to move the pitman arm one spline. There are four missing teeth (equally spaced) on the pitman shaft so you can install the arm in four places, but three of them are obviously incorrect.
Here is a paper on steering system centering. You might find it very helpful. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-co...ev28jl2009.pdf Jim |

+1, this is the correct solution. Trying to force the steering wheel straight by misaligning any of the steering components will lead to far more serious problems and possibly a failure.

As noted earlier , i did not force it on and i thought i moved it one spline which i could not have cause it will only line up one way ! Thank's everyone for the replies and an alignment is in order
