Default Directional Working Intermittently

I think I have read all or almost all of the posts on directional signals not working and they don't seem to address my strange issue: I have a 67 RS convertible. The left front turn signal works intermittently. The parking light always works. Today, the parking light was working as usual but not the signal. I took the ground wire off and the parking light continued to work. I was moving things around and nothing seemed to happen, but after I turned the car off and turned it back on, the turn signal worked for a while, again without the ground disconnected. Later it was not working again. I took the whole thing out and stripped away some of black covering over the wires going into the back of the housing and nothing seemed obviously wrong. A few times I was able to make something happen by moving the wires around (signal stop working and sometimes the parking light) but not consistently. I put it back together and it would only work with the ground attached. The signal is still intermittent. I know it sounds like a ground, but any option other than replacing the whole housing/socket (seems like one piece)? BTW, any trick to getting the bulb out? I can't fit my fingers in there. Thanks for any help you can give me.
