I took the plunge,
I bought a 69 coupe project ..sight unseen (other than pics). The previous owner did quite a bit of work but now it's up to me to finish. I'm just getting to know the car the past few days crawling around in and under it. A few questions to start (I'm sure there will be many more over the next 2 years). This is my 2nd restore project, the first was a '75 VW Super Beetle. I considered that a "light restore" as the body was in pretty good shape and required very little work. I consider myself a novice at this stuff. The trunk gutter is in pretty bad shape. I ordered the 3 piece repair kit from NPD last night. Wondering if anyone has used this and how did it work out? Was it difficult to install, much cutting and welding? The car has a 350/auto installed (this was not original as the car still has a clutch pedal). How do I tell what trans is has in? The engine starts quickly, runs a bit rough at idle that I assme it has some type of cam. The compression checked out at 157 psi to 160 psi over all 8 cylinders. It has a Edelbrock 1460 carb and the intake manifold is a Holley Contender. The heads have a casting number that I can't track down. It's 8870126. Can anyone help with that? |

Tom - You should pop over to the Camaro Research Group CRG site http://camaros.org
Most of us are members in both locations. CRG is the official house of knowledge of all things Camaro. Start here: http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml and then look at transmissions: http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml

Tom,
Attached is a transmission id chart to help you on the transmission question but you should check the numbers on it if you want more info. The trunk gutter is going to require cutting and minor welding to attach to the body but not that difficult to do. As far as the heads go...you need to recheck the numbers. Close as I can find is 1967-70 3970126 327 1.94 1.5 and they are 74cc with 1.94 intakes and 1.50 exhaust valves. (link) http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/sbheads.htm Kev |

Thanks for the quick replys, I'm going to love this site. I will sign up of the Research Group site also.
I had an experienced restore guy take a look at my car last night. What I thought would be quick 15 min. evaluation turned into 2 hours of crawling in, under and into the engine compartment. What a eye openner for a novice like me. He pointed out a ton of stuff that needs fixing. When I asked him where to start he said he always starts with the tub. Take off anything that is bolted on (doors, fenders, hood, etc) and focus on the body. Once that is done you have a solid starting point and everything that can be bolted on can be replaced if needed. So this weekend I start the disassembly of the front clip, doors, truck, bumpers, etc. As the car was originally a manual shift(clutch pedal is still in) he suggested going back to that with a 5-speed. Any thoughts? |

Tom...
I had a 4 speed and went to a TKO 5 speed and would never go back. The 1-4 gears are just like the old 4 speed but it has an overdrive gear (5th) that allows me to do highway speeds at cruising RPM's ! The is plenty of info in the Transmissions Topic about the TKO setup. Also, be sure to go to the projects being done in the Build Topic.
