newbee needs help, thanks in advance. Easy question for anyone whose done it before. Do I need to drop the oil plan as well to replace the timing cover gasket, 350 '69 SM block. any special tools required for this job?

NO you will not have to loosen the Oil Pan but you may damage part of the oil part Gasket that extends under the timing cover. Silicon or RTV Sealant will repair this corner. Be sure to use a Damper installer tool and be careful not to caulk the Damper. Tapping the Damper with a Mallet over a piece of bored usually ensures the Damper Ramp has mounted the Snout of the crank before applying pressure with the tool.
