I am installing an aftermarket air conditioning system in my 68 (complete unit from classic air). It comes with a center vent, but it looks "generic" (black plastic), so I ordered the factory air conditioning vent.
![]() It seems like I need another part to go with this to retain the round bezel in the vent assembly. Is there a spring or retainer of some kind? The round bezel just spins freely inside the vent ![]() ![]() Thanks Evan |

Do you have the felt strips in place? I am not sure if there is any kind of stop to keep the vent from spinning or not but the felt strips do add enough friction to keep the vent in place.

You need the rear adapter duct . I ran into this installing my Vintage air in my Z. Kit came with their duct complete but I did not like the appearance. Ordered the factory type vent and removed Vintage rear portion from their vent and tapped it up with duct tape. Installed. Factory vent complements side astro vents just as if the Z came with factory air. Guess I am the only person to install AC in a factory Z.

I will check it with the felt tape on the front.
Does anyone know what the factory duct looks like on a 68? It is not listed in my GM part book? |

I had a similar problem with my center vent years ago. My car has factory A/C. The center vent would work fine unless I ran the A/C. The cold air would contract the metal vent enough so it would rotate itself around wherever it felt like making it difficult to keep the A/C blowing on us in the car.
When I had the dash apart, I took a look at it. I bought some round velcro buttons at a fabric store and used a gasket punch to make a hole in the middle of the buttons. I used, as I recall, two of the loop (soft) side buttons on each side of the vent which snugged it up enough so it can still be moved but now stays where it is put. It's been about 15 years now and it still works fine. |

Yes, i just got my vin air gen IV in i ordered the orginal vent because i like the look. I noticed the spinning thing would be an issue as the center was not locked down. The other thing i do not like is there no direction control. Any ideas? Make some slits and slip them in to the center vent to direct ac to driver and passenger?
Ideas wanted? Thanks 68camrs |
