Default T56 questions

hey everyone. i got a couple of quick question. i work at a chevy dealer and i like to pick parts out of the scrap pile that i can rebuild/reuse. two of the things i have collected are 2 t56 transmissions. i have one from a 2001 trans am that was replaced because the owner ran over a rock and cracked the case and bell housing. and i have one out of a 96 z28 that was replaced because it was popping out of 3rd gear. needs those plastic bushings that always break and has a questionable 3rd gear and syncro. so my plan is to take the case from the 96 and put the guts from the 2000 in it.

i just want to verify that the front part of the housing is differnt for the LT1 and LS1 models. if it is i can get the front housing and bell housing for around $400 for the pair at work. i have the LT1 housing but i'm planing on mating the tranny to an LS6 that i pulled from the scrap pile also. (Needs a piston) thanks.

ok i read that and today at work i had the parts guy check the LS1 cases against the LT1 cases. the only peice that is the same is the center piece. which is also the most expensive so thats ok. the tailshaft housing and the front adapter are both different. but from reading that thread it looks like i can just put the LS1 input shaft in the LT1 shaft and use a Ls1 belhousing to bolt it up?

that's what I read, tho it was a while ago. Also I seem to recall that the LT1 and LS1 input shafts are different lengths. Coiuld be wrong tho, it's been months since I read that post.

Mike did a great job filling in a lot of blanks.

You'd have better luck asking in the Transmissions forum on LS1tech.com...

The main case should be the same for both the LT1 and LS1 T56's. As you point out, the tail shaft housing and the front "intermediate" plates are different. You should be able to use the LT1 main case with the LS1 guts, tail shaft and front "intermediate" plate. LS1 T56 bellhousings go for about $150 on Ebay.

well my intermediate plate and tailshaft housing are cracked also. will the input shaft from the LS1 fit in the LT1. and will a LS1 bellhousing bolt up to a LT1 intermediate plate?

The shaft will fit inside the case, but it is 3/8" longer than an LT1. The LS1 bell will not bolt up to an LT1 front plate.

well i looked at the cracked tranny today and brought it down to a welder and the bellhousing and intermediate plate are repairable since they are very minor cracks. so everything should work out with very minimal part replacing.
