Default TPI MAS to MAP conversion HELP!!

Guys.. i am new at this forum. What brought me here is that i need to convert my current TPI system. It is from a 1989 Camaro IROC-Z. It is MASS and i need to convert it to MAP.

i have researched but can not find the information on how to do this conversion. It seems to me like it is very easy. Has anyone done this before? I just need to be pointed in the right direction.

Thanks!
-Jorge

I believe that car has both a maf and map sensor, so you simply remove or unplug the maf, shut it off in the tune, and re-tune the ve tables for speed density. There are systems available if you want to tune it yourself, or you can likely find a tuner to do the tuning for you.

Is there a particular reason you want to do this? In most cases I wouldn't ditch the maf, but there are exceptions.

Thanks. Yes the reason is that the bay area between the engine and radiator in my Car is very tight and i can not use the MAF sensor.

I have been reading hours now and now i am very confused. i have read both directions: i will use my actual EMC and just change/mod my actual harness"... "i will need to swap the ECM from a MAP system and reprogram the Chip"., So now i am getting worry. I am thinking of drilling a big hole in my Hood and put the MAF out.

I have converted a couple maf cars to speed density and with the tuning software it is a very simple process, assuming you know what to do. There was no harness changes either, just unplug the maf, remove it if you want, shut the maf function off in the tune, and re-tune the ve tables for proper a/f. It takes time, but a good tuner can do it in a couple hours or so.

I would not suggest doing the tuning yourself if you don't know how to tune it now. Does your car have a map sensor now in addition to the maf?

Cool!. Obviously i don't have any idea on how to program the Chip. Can you suggest someone who can do this?

How much do you estimate a chip reprog. will cost?

Thanks!

Jorge, welcome. First off, I wanted to say that doing the MAP swap can be done somewhat easy......it's not as hard as it sounds. I have done this a few times and it has worked for me.

The best way for me to describe how to do it "correctly", is to give you a link to a page that I used. In short, you will need a late model TPI 7730 numbered ECM from a 90 to 91 F body. Once you have that, you will need to repin the pinouts on the acctual wire harness. Then you will need a tune. I'll give links to all of this below........

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ecm_swap_730/
This link will explain how to do this MAF to speed density swap.

http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~davis/z28/ECMs/86to92.txt
This will clearly explain which wires will need to be re-pinned on your harness.

This link has LOADS of info on the TPI system.

Call and talk to Jami. He knows these TPI systems like the back of his hand. He has done mine and many other systems. He is very good at what he does and will work with you until it is correct.

Good luck!!!

Guys the best site for this stuff hands down is the third gen site. Again do your own datalogging and tune after you decide what you want to do. Here is the link for the conversion take your pick as to which one you want to do. The 727/730 conversion utilizes the 90-92 MAP setup. You can run a SAUJP that has a number of improvements including the abilitiy to use a WBO2 sensor to run and tune your car. Too much stuff to list but here is the conversion site:

Jorge,

From everything I have read, the MAF is the preferred system. Easier (cheaper) to tune, less sensitive to modifications, etc. Do you have room to put in a 90% turn, and mount the MAF to that?

Good luck,

Tom

Thank you very much Tom.

I really need you guys to point me to the right direction. I have read both directions: "MAF is the best to go if you want to modify your engine and take the best of it." on the other hand i read that the MAP is the bes desireable...

So what is the best?.. yes i guess i can use a 90% turn tube...

Thanks!.

So what is the best?
The best system will be up to you.

To make it strait forward,

*** MASS........will help with larger cams/headders/aftermarket runners/headwrk/ect/ect.

*** MAP..........will do all of the above, and it has some good things and bad things.........it is a little harder to tune when you add things such as headders/large cams/ect.......but can be done. The good part, it looks cleaner without the MAF meter, and it easier to work on.

Like I said, there is no "best"....it's all up to you. Do the research on the site listed above 69Ghost posted....... www.thirdgen.org .......lots of info on the TPI motors there.....both MASS and MAP systems.

The general consensus is that while MAF is easier to tune and responds to engine changes easier MAP is still the preferred method but it takes more time to tune. I have been tuning my car for a number of years. It is very easy once you get the hang of it. You can get a setup to datalog and tune for as much or less than a custom tune. For a little more you can do real time tuning. If you go with a MAP setup there is no way possible that any custom programmer can do a decent tune on your car without a number of datalogs. For MAF it is easier but still a shot in the dark. What you will find is that once you get into it you will know what I am saying is true. There are a lot of guys on the thirdgen site that have been doing this for years and will help out. For a cheap mail order tune try Brian Herder at PCM's For Less. He only charges $50 or so for a tune.
