Will the older points type distributor (say 65 to 79) for small block motors interchange with the big block motors? Other than springs and weights are there any other differences?

Nope different advance curve (especially in the vacuum can) otherwise interchangeable. I can not see going with a points distributor unless you need a numbers matching distributor, which it is not because they had different numbers. There are people that make HEI's that look like old school distributors and even those that look like a magneto.
