Default gauges

This might be a dumb question, But which is better electric or mechanical gauges? I had always heard mechanical was better. I DONT KNOW..... I also just got the autometer gauge pod and am not sure what style I want in them.

I think it is just a matter of preference. If your going with the Autometer system, I would recommend going with an electrical oil gauge. That way you don't have any hot oil inside your car under pressure.

Agreed ^. I just installed the AM 4 pod console and switched to electrical for temp and oil.

I just bought the Auto Meter mechanical oil pressure and water temp a week ago. I'll probably switch those to electric also...

I have mechanical guages and if i were to do it again, and I might, I'd use electric units. They are more reliable today and I won't need to worry if the oil line will leak in the car.

The autometer mechanical gauges are very good, and they are cheap. but I don't like the "way too long fragile tube" on the temp gauge, and I absolutely will not have an oil line inside the car waiting to break.

I love the full sweep electrics, but they are big $$$$.

I used 90 degree sweep ultra lite white face electrics, and I like em.

I also bought the electrical autometer gauges and I'm really happy. I had the three pod mechanical and my oil fitting LEAKED continuously under pressure. I had to lay a white towel under the gauge over the Chevy rubber mats. One of the best things I did.

I had mech gauges in another car, oil & temp.
Oil line popped out of the back of the gauge one time late at night, dripping a buch of oil onto carpet, cause at night, --'natch its dark, you go, "what was that noise?" and by the time you realise, you have a mess.
Then you have to figure out how to fix it to get the car started again & get home. Not fun.
Temp gauge always reads a temp. here in the desert, you see it reading (barely) a temp when its been sitting overnight. Kinda wierd.

Electric. Learn from my mistake.

I have 3 5/8" w/ mech oil. Luckilly it never leaked. Sitting next to the car is a Autometer pod w/ 4 NV elect full sweep gauges to match the dash and my Alpine. We are doing it with the new painless wiring kit. It will be beautiful & better. There is no elect full sweep volt meter. At least w/ the NV series. I did Oil pressure, volts, water temp & trans temp.
