Ok experts, what I would like to do is to paint the dash the same color as the body when I have it all apart. I will be removing the windshield and all for easy access, but after reading a few posts lately, I'm concerned about too much glare. I will be using a bright yellow if that helps...

Is there a way to use the same paint as is used for the rest of the car, and if so, how can I keep it from being too glossy? Do I still need to clear-coat it, or can I leave it flat? Is there a way to base/clear it and then lightly sand/scuff to take off the shine?

Thanks for the help,
Bill C.

Glare can be a problem. And I think a shiney bright yellow would be a problem at times. But, as we all know, the dashs on these cars slope downward, so a direct hit with sun may not get as bad as you think. I've got REALLY bad glare off my steering wheel. It's a 67 deluxe and with the sun behind me it will hit that chrome and, OH MY! It's a mirror.

I've seen yellow painted dashs before and they look good matching the rest of the car.
I think you'd get more glare between the dash pad & windshield. Even with it satin black I'll get some glare off of that. Whatever you do, don't paint that part yellow, then you will have problems seeing, not to mention it won't look very good either. LOL

I imagine you could tone down the shine and go with a satin finish for the dash, though I can't tell you how to achieve that with the materials you'll be using.
There are guy's on here that know there stuff when it comes to mixing paint, I'm sure they would have those answers.

I'll be painting my race cars dash gold to match the rest of the car, but won't worry to much about the glare factor since it won't be a big issue at 100+ ( I know, wishfull thinking). LOL

Put some flattenng agent in your clear- that way you have a matte-finsh on the dash..it will still look shiny, but won't reflect light like a full gloss topcaot.

Thanks for the help so far, but guess what Steve, that's exactly what I was thinking of doing! I was going to paint the metal area between the dash pad and the windshield to match the outside paint, then use a black dashpad to break it up a bit, but then back to the yellow body color for the front of the dash. Why don't you think it will look good? Several people I have asked think it will look pretty sharp like I do?!!

merch120,
Thanks, I knew there was probably a good solution, that's a good idea.

I got those Bill, but thanks for the suggestion! I was more concerned about night-time driving when I have on my not-so-dark shades!

Thanks,
Bill C.

When I got my white convertible the dash (between the windshield and the dash pad) was body color. I didn't even think about the glare factor, IMO it sucked!! Nobody commented on it but it got to me after a year. It was well worth removing the glass and the effort involved in painting it. As a side note I never found another camaro at shows and cruise-in's that was painted body color other than a red one with a red dash and piller pads.
