So I am in the process of removing my firewall for replacement and came upon what looks to be a collision repair. The top of the cowl looks undamaged. Am I going to be able to just put in a patch on the cowl where the firewall is welded to or am I going to need to do something more extreme?

if you were near Denver, i would give you an entire firewall, it came as an extra part when I bought mine.

I'd patch that in a heartbeat.
Have you looked at the underside of that damaged cowl area to see how it looks underneath? eg. how big of a patch square you'll need. it'd be great if it was just that lip area where the cowl and firewall join. |

I snapped a few more pics:
From inside the cowl: ![]() From under the dash (most of this damaged will be replaced by the repro firewall): ![]() Inspecting the cowl closer, I noticed some creases in the cowl that I can't tell if they are supposed to be like that or are they additional damage?:

Maybe that was a "gentle massage" to make room for a HEI.. if the cowl is straight otherwise. id masage the dents back and patch it.

That is really a fairly simple fix, just cut and patch, as far as the photos go, in the last one with the red circled areas, those bends are normal

That's what I was thinking too or someone was taking the tranny out and didn't support the rear of the engine and it rocked back and sent the distributor into the firewall. If that car was hit hard enough to damage it up there I think it probably would have been totalled.

good to hear from everyone...I was thinking along the same lines that if the car was hit hard enough for the engine to come back and hit the firewall, then the damage would have been much worse. I'll keep you posted on my progress of this replacement.
