I have a messed up thumb from breaking boards etc when I was younger.
Now that I am getting older it hurts all the time. Got so bad I went to a doctor and he started me on the shots. I get one shot every three months and my thumb has never felt better. Is the shot a cover up for the pain, sure it is, but at least I can use the thumb to work on my Camaro etc. I have been getting the shots for 2 years now and no side effects. I would recomend the shots if all else fails and surgery was next. The shots work for approx 3months.

Go to a physical therapist and have them show you how to exercise/stretch your shoulder to reduce/remove any pain. That is the right way to resolve the issue. This day and age it amazes me how many people want the 'quick fix' drug that hides the pain/discomfort instead of resolving their problems with proper exercise, stretching, and caloric intake control.

I agree on the PT completely.
My brother in law gets the shots for his back. THey're not great, and the pain always comes back, but he feels it's better than (the uncertain outcome of) surgery.

case1:
my dad got a shot of that in his shoulder and the pain was instantly gone... case2: my brother has a slipped disc in his lower spine. He got the shot and he thinks it made it worse. He's now going through physical therapy with good results so far. all cases are unique and on that note, i'm gonna go exercise some myself. good luck

Get an MRI done and make sure it's not a rotater tear. If so, surgery. Or try acupuncture.

Mike, you are in the the same business as me and we're both in the the same boat. I lived with pain every day because I was told that was it. I've told many others the same thing, get a good physical therapist. They are not all good so do you're homework. Once you find one you will get results. You probably will have to go back periodicaly for a "tune-up" but it's a more lasting treatment than drugs. Good luck.

I've had about 4 or 5 in the last 15 years in my right shoulder. This account of bursitis. I am gussing that you don't have that account you would not have worked for a year with it. Bursitis is Very painful and disables you to the point that you sling your arm. But, as to your question, yes it made it go away but it takes a day or two. Any number of things can bring it on, like shooting my bow or yes hammering. I cain't do either in excess. Key word excess. Hope this helps. Tom |

Mike, I have had good luck with it in my shoulder, and have not had the pain for a few years now. I just had the shots in my wrists for carple tunnel, and so far its been great. I know its not a long term fix, but my experience has been great. Now for the ugly, my wife had a shot many years ago, and we found out she was allergic to it. I thought she was having a heart attack, it scared the bejesus out of me. I have to vote for the quick fix with physical therapy, it was a good combo for me. I was a Boilermaker, and swung a hammer for a living as well, not much time to get better if your always working. Good luck, Mike.

I just had a steroid injection in my left shoulder on monday morning for a minor rotater cuff tear. pain was gone but my heart rate increased for 2 days, normally in the low 70's, it went to high 90's. made me think, shoulder pain? or heart attack? which one is worse? no more for me, thank you..

I had a neck injury (Fall from scaffolding) about 6 years ago. I was in pain for 8 weeks. Not just a little pain, but pain that OxyContin with a Vicodin chaser & trips to the emergency room for ''pain cocktail'' injections in the middle of the night would not stop.
I finally was scheduled for 3 spinal injections. First one made it worse for a few hours, but by morning i was feeling much better. Got the second shot and felt so good the third shot was canceled. I've been pretty much pain free since, although I have some nerve damage that causes muscle spasms occasionally. It was a last ditch effort after everything else they tried failed. Worked for me. |

I had rotator cuff surgery about a year ago. My insurance wanted a Cortizone shot before they would pay for the operation, it didn't help at all. The doc said the complete recovery would probably be six months....he was about right. I fealt better after a month but it took at least 6 month until I didn't notice anything when working and so forth.
Good luck... |

It depends on what is really wrong. I have had 3 in my shoulder and they helped out great. Saved me from getting surgery. They are the cheap way to go, so if you are paying out of pocket it definitely won't hurt to try. If surgery is in your future, then the shots aren't going to do anything but delay the inevitable.

It is a steroid. Normally used for short term relief. Long term usage can result in some serious side effects. Just saw on HBO sports show, a segment on wrestlers in their 30s and 40s who are dying. Doctors in my area limit the number injections, usually 3, for short term treatment. As it treats the symptoms, it is best to see if the problem can be corrected by other means, ie therapy, surgery.
