Default QA1 conversion install

Hey guys,

Finally finishing up the new house now so I'm going to take a break this weekend and do some mods. I'm installing a QA1 coilover setup and my question is will I need any special tools besides a spring compressor. (internal ??) I'm taking the car to a friends shop so I'd like to try and have everything ready and available.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

I'm in same boat as you - I've had my kit sitting in the garage for months waiting while I'm busy with remodel/construciton projects around the homestead.

There are a few posts that I've seen on this so recommend you do a search and from what I've read the roller washers/bearings are really helpful so hope you bought those for the extra $20 in addition to the kit. They say it makes adjusting much more easier. If you haven't go them may want to wait and get them first. Also - will need spanner wrench to turn the adjuster nut. I haven't installed yet but this is what I've learned from other posts so let me know if you come across any hurdles that you think will make job go smoother for others.

Hey Bill,

I did purchase the bearing kit as well as the spanner wrench so hopefully I won't have to many problems but we all know how that goes. I will update when it's all done and share any issues I run into.

Thanks, Joe

For once, this install went without a single problem. Pulled the car on the rack and 45 minutes later I was adjusting the ride height. I couldn't see doing this without the bearing kit and spanner wrenchs. The only thing I had to do was drill out the exitsing holes where the old shocks mounted to the lower A frame. This allowed the new bolts and nuts to fit freely. I have the Hotchkis rear springs with about 25 inches from bottom lip of quarter to the ground. My adjustment was pretty good with about 10 threads showing on both sides, this gave me about 24 1\2 inches from the bottom lip of the fender to the ground. Still working on the shock adjustments but right now there still set to factory. (in the middle)

Joe,
Did you use the spring compressor on this conversion? Can't picture how to use a spring compressor and get the shock in the center of the spring. Will be doing this conversion soon.

No spring compressor needed to install the new setup. One of us pushed up on the A frame while the other started the ball joint bolt. Once the ball joint bolt was threaded it was a wrap. You really don't start getting pressure on the springs till you start to make your adjustments. (Raising the ride height) It's not necessary but it would help if you could get a buddy to give you a hand.
