Default "finding" my wireless?

Now this is really annoying, cause I seem to have done this not once, but TWICE!!!

I have 2 linksys wireless routers, and both are set to "access point only"
That means they don't exist at the ip address of my gateway, which is a different physical device... They must exist "somewhere" but it seems in both cases I did not write down an IP address!

I need to change some settings... which as far as I know will involve accessing them thru my browser, by typing in the IP adress that I don't know!

Any idea how to find these things?

Your manual should tell you the address.

I think it is 192.168.1.254 for linksys. Thats what my linksys router is (not wireless though).

ok, found my wireless. it's on 192.168.1.1

Now I'm wondering why the heck I did this?

My main network is on 192.168.2.x

I connected the WAN port on the wireless hub to my main switch...
and left dhcp on on the wireless router!
Why did I do that?

ok, been "playing" between the last sentence and this one. My linksys wireless router (wrt54g) is a little wierd. I can't get into the configuration UNLESS it's in it's default, with DHCP on and such like that there!

I can hard reset it, access it's setup on 192.168.1.1, chenge it's ip, turn off dhcp, configure wireless stuff... and when I apply all that, it comes back up as I told it to.

I can connect to it wirelessly. it connects to the rest of my wired network. The camera will connect to it.

But I can't get back into the configuration! not until I reset it again!
What a hassle!

What's the reason for the change away from 192.168.1.1 Jim? It's an address that is on the inside of your router and anything 192.168... is "private use" and isn't passed across the internet. My guess is the 1.1 address is hard coded into the software used for configuration. Set the password and be done with it or reset each time you want to access and change the config.

Dennis, both the networks I use this on have another DHCP server and operate in a different IP range. I really bought the wrong devices, should have got the WAG54g access point rather than the routers.

I'll play with my similar setup at home this weekend and see what I find.

Basically, if my wired network is on 192.168.2.x and my wireless is on 192.168.1.x, my wired systems can't see the wireless video cameras.

I know there are more modern ways to pass traffic across subnets Jim but I think if you do a search on each PC and find a file called "hosts" or "hosts.cfg" (rename it to hosts) and add an entry for each address used, they all will see each other and the cameras just fine. This is really not for dhcp but I think you can omit the host name and just include the IP. You could just turn off dhcp and assign everything static as well.

I will look for that, Dennis.

I'll also need to be doing a whole lot of learning about more advanced networking...This stuff is complicated, lots of hidden controls and dos cammand files that have stayed while various wizards have been layered over them so us in the dark can kinda control them.

I learned "networking" with OS7 Mac's and Appletalk...lol.

Just to lay out the big picture for those trying to help me out...
I'm putting a number of IP cameras in my home, all with wirelessG network connections.
Adding a new Windows 2003 server running the camera server software.

The new server will need to access the internet, and allow internet access into it.
I will probably also use it as a webserver for a camaro site and ftp access, in addition to allowing me and my wife to access the video cameras from our offices.

Right now there will be 2 routers between the server and the internet!

I'm pretty sure I'll find this completely unworkable, and will end up putting the server in the basement, putting a second network card in it, and configuring the server itself as my router and DHCP server.

And on top of that, the server will be "headless", no keyboard, mouse, or monitor attached, all administration done remotely!

No card. Cameras are Dlink IP cameras, got 1 5300G PTZ and 2 900G fixed so far.

The cameras are pretty smart on thier own. Direct access from a browser. Will be trying the bundled s/w, and have a demo of something called "view commander" which I will try as well.

I have a spare computer with the card...
I can mask areas, diff senitivites for areas , face reconition, count pp/cars going in or out, email to alert, beep, and or ring a phone, access each camera thru internet, and heap of other stuff..
I motion record 24/7 to a hd drive...250 gig gives me a couple months on 4 cameras
In my office I use duel monitor setup with 1 montor showing 4 camaras, then thats divided off to a small 14" monitor in the lounge cnr, so can see ppl coming down the driveway...long driveway.

I have even setup a ip camera in a parrot nesting box to record the laying of eggs thru to feeding raising chicks.
Oh and had a stray cat coming in thru the cat door in the middle of the night...at the same time use a stock (for cattle) portable electic fence unit... live end connected to a peice of tinfoil stuck to the out side of the cat flap, the earth to a peice laying on the porch below the cat flap, with a wet tea towel laid over it..
Yep saw the cat looking thru, and then identfy it, saw it push the flap with its nose...
havnt seen it since lol...

Jim, so you have 2 Linksys setup as APs only and connected to a switch? The switch is then connected to what device to get to the internet? Are either APs setup as a DHCP server? Are you wanting to isolation the camera from the other network or is that they way it is currently setup? I take it you added the second AP to either isolate the network or to increase the wireless netowork footprint?
