Thumbs up Wheelstand contest **Video**

If this has been previously posted, I appologize.

Check out the videos. There are some really cool cars beating themselves down the track. I'm sure there was some big prizes for first place.....I havent a clue but from the looks of how they were treating the cars, it must have been big.

My personal favorite.....the Cutlass at the 1:55 mark. And of course, who wouldent love the Chevette flip.

Warning: There are some major headder and suspention carnage on a few first gen Camaro's and a few others.

They had the 2008 version of this on the Speed Channel over the weekend. As I recall the prize was 20K. A '69 Camaro won the competition. When I say won I say it tongue in cheek as it appears he hurt the car pretty bad. It was almost painfull to watch.

While I find this somewhat entertaining I guess I care too much about my car to ever consider such craziness. (Not that I could pull a wheelstand in my old warhorse)

There is something for everybody here in the good ole USA I guess.

I'm sure the owners of the strip LOVE all the gouges and scrapes caused by guys smashing their cars back down into the pavement.

Red face Re: Wheelstand contest **Video**

Humm - seems to be a more carnage than the prize money would cover ...
That twisted launch of the 1960 Chevy sure reminds me of how crappy my '62 was at getting off the line straightly - that stock 'truck-arm' coil suspension sucked for drag use

This is a annual event and it's on my must see list. I think the prize money was $25K this year. It is a popular and growing event. Many of the cars are race cars with the wheelie bars removed (not allowed). Many return competitors as well. Not sure I would beat my car like that but, I'm sure most of these cars are not "lookers" in person. They are purpose built cars, their purpose is to get abused.

As far as the track it is an IHRA track so I am sure the surface is decent. Just listen to the fans and look at how many people are there, that should tell you it is a success.

Not as much as they love the stands filled with paying spectators and all the beer concessions! And don't forget the national TV coverage.
It seems to be held near the end of the season, so maybe the track is ready for a resurface or repair by then anyway.

I have been working in Rockford IL for the last 10 weeks. Tomorrow is my last day and back home where it is nice and warm . I was lucky enough to be able to go to Byron IL where the track is to see this. All I have to say is: I lived most of my life in the south and thought I have been involved with, done myself or witnessed more Redneck or as someone said Hillbilly things but this goes close to the top of the list. Just walking among the crowd, especial along the ridge to the right, was like going to a different world, weired. Redneck and Hillbilly'ness can be any where.

PS
It was great............

Hillbillys in Chicago?

As a 5 time entrant in this contest, let me say it is the country's premier wheelstand competition by far.

This is a video of my T/A coming out of the hole, mine is in the right lane. It didn't do much damage to the car but we got lucky.
