Default cam for torque....110 or 112 LSA?????

Yes.....I'm still trying to find just the right cam for my tow vehicle, now that I have the carb and intake on the shelf. Here's the questions:

I'm trying to ween myself from only going with Comp cams stuff. They list a their best 454 towing cam to be a 268H with LSA 110 and both valves listed at .485.

Every other cam manufacturer (crane, crower, lunati) seem to list a split duration with the exhaust side having both more duration and lift. Some also have a LSA of 112-114. I'm just trying to get huge grunt, but don't care about gas mileage. Is the spilt cams the way to go??? How can a bigger LSA help my low end???

Last questions is the crane energizers. I can't believe that jeg's lists a cam AND lifter kit for only $129 plus the $11 shipping. How reliable are these Crane cams??? I've never run one. Thanks!!!

Tighter LSAs tend to raise torque to a higher rpm as well as reduce overall torque.

I ran the 268H for SBC on my old 307. On that engine the bottom end made it feel like a healthy 350. The RPMs kept pulling well into the 6,000 range. I would imagine the BBC version will be designed similarly.

Comp Cams almost always uses a 110o lobe. I don't know why. I personally prefer a 112o or a 114o lobe on a street car, but I am sure a lot will disagree. They will both rev slower than a 106o-108o lobe, but my SBC 400 is not built to be a wind up toy, and neither is your tow rig. You get a better idle, vacuum, and response from a 112o-114o lobe.

Split duration/lift only helps when your intake/exhaust ratio is low on the exhaust side. You can research your heads to find out where yours are, but honestly I don't think it will be worth the effort on a tow vehicle.

No need to use a lower case o or an * to indicate degrees. You can easily get the degree sign by keying Alt-0176...

Max grunt at a price of lower rpm's will be created w/ a duration at .050", 210/218, 112/108, max. lift cam.

That said, Harold recommends his....

272/217, 112/? .515". The best cam for pulling trailers, car-hauler or boats. Excellent bottom end and mid-range torque. Works power accessories. 1600-5500 rpm.

Hold the Alt key down, key in the number 0176, then release the Alt key.
You can get more codes from your character map, under system accessories.

Think of the lobes for a given cylinder as carats ^

As LSA decreases the lobes move closer together

and a 3rd ^ is created betwixt the 2 that represents overlap. Think of overlap as a time period when both valves are open and the engine can't accomplish much down low. The slower the engine is turning the greater the time period, and the converse as well.

So, minimizing overlap maximizes bottom end ballz. Overlap is increased by tighter LSA as well as by increasing dur on the exh. or on both lobes.

Generally, a wide LCA cam like a 112 to a 114 raises each end of the power curves, but lowers the overall peak power numbers. Narrower overlap like Tim's talking about.

Therefore a narrower LCA cam like a 108 to a 106 lowers each end and raises the peak power numbers! Wider overlap so it will be choppier!

There's a heck of a lot more to this, but GENERALLY speaking.

Crane Cams are very reliable and have been around for years. I would run the crane with a 112 and split duration. I really think that a cam with the duration that you are talking about its not going to make a whole lot of difference which one you use, just pick one and put it in. I would be more worried about gearing for a tow vehicle
