Default Minor Problem With Camaro - I Should Have Known Better

So the car has been sitting in the garage since October and I have not had a chance to start it up and drive it around since then. So I decide to install my electric fan kit.

I remove fan, and mount the electric fan to the radiator.

I drain the radiator and install the new sending unit and wiring.

I wire up the relay and the rest of the electrical connections.

So after all that, and having the car sit for several months without starting it, I crank it over a few times for about 15-20 seconds and the car starts up and sounds healthy. After a few seconds my buddy is giving me the universal sign to shut it down. Seems that the cheap fuel filter that I was going to replace was squirting gas all over the place.

I used that filter because I had it laying around the garage when we put the motor in. Seems I got an attack of the "lazys" and didn't change from that crappy filter to a better one --- Oh well, easy fix, but it just goes to show you -- I should have known better

It looks like the sending unit wire is going to get burnt laying on the header. You can get 90* spade connectors to keep the wires away.

There's actually about 1/4" space between the header and wire, but yea I agree with the 90* spade connectors or some type of asbestos cover.

Doug, Have you ever heard that you not supposed to put teflon tape on the threads that it will cause a bad signal. How true is this and also your not supposed to run the sending unit wire next to an power wires how true is this.

Dave -- its a Painless wiring kit and the instructions were very specific about not using teflon tape on the sending unit because you wouldn't get a good signal. As far as the wires to the sending unit, one wire comes from the the relay box (see picture) and the other wire is a ground. Once I replace the fuel filter, I'll fire the car back up and see if the fan turns on when the motor warms up.
