Default SBC head/valve size info data base ?

I have been trying to find info on different head casting numbers and only come up with mor-tec's site. They don't list valve sizes. Is there a good site that lists valve sizes and whether they came with hardened seats to go with the casting numbers ??

All sbc heads after i think its 75 came with induction harden exhaust seats or have inserts in them. What casting Number are you looking at.

The engine in my car has 3986339X heads. The engine was installed as a long block sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. They may already have the hardened seats, but I can't find any solid info on valve size. If they are the same 1.94/1.60 as the 461's I bought I may just keep them for the rebuild. If they are the smaller 1.72's, then I will need to rebuild my 461's.

Smile Re: SBC head/valve size info data base ?

I will try to help.

All early 265's, all 283's except the 315hp/283 jobber, lo-po 305's, 307's, 327's and 350's came w/ 1.72"/1.50" valves. 250hp on down 327's and 2-barrel 350's here. I flat don't know if GM ever installed 1.72"/1.50" valve heads on the 400's or not?? Sorry...

The 262 and I think 267 and maybe some lo-po 305's came w/ 1.72"/1.38" valves.

The 315hp/283 and the average hp engines from 275 and 300hp/327's, the 295 and 300hp/350's and 400's came w/ 1.94"/1.50" valves, w/ the early 400's, ('71 and '72), also using 1.94"/1.60" valves.

The hi-po 290hp/302, 350/365/375hp/327's and 330/350/360/370hp/350's came w/ 2.02"/1.60" valves!

And last, the hi-po 305HO jobbers came w/ 1.84"/1.50" valves.

And as said earlier, the hard seats kicked in a couple a years before unleaded gasoline showed up, somewhere around late '71 to early '73 or so.

How far off am I guys??

Being they came on 307 and 350 i,am going to say it has 1.84 1.500 valve size. I can,t be sure 100 %. Your 461 will pick your engine up in compression.

Yeah, I figured since they were listed for the 307 that they would be for a 2GC 350 and have a smaller valve than a 4MV head.
Thru the plug hole, it looks like the pistons are flat top. I have another block that I am going to build with .030 dish pistons for the 461 heads. I was just curious if the 339X heads were worth considering. I guess I still need to spend the dough to upgrade the 461's.

Thanks.....
