Default Installing a vinyl top on a non vinyl top '69

Hey all,
How hard would it be to install a vinyl top on a '69 Camaro that originally did not come with one? How much do you think it would cost to have a top installer to put the vinyl top on? Just curious.
Thanks
-Doug

WHY::::::::::::Just me I'm not much on a vinyl top,is the roof not straight. The trim clips would probably be the worst part of the job they would have to be screwed or pop riveted on and this may be a potential leak.Finding the trim I think you would want NOS I heard the after market doesn't fit to well.

Hey David,
The roof is like glass - it's like looking into a black hole the black paint is that deep. I'm just kicking it around. Thought it may look nice. My only fear as you mentioned would be getting the clips installed right. I would have to find someone who is really good with vinyl tops.

There was one Yenko that was ordered without a vinyl top, and the potential buyer wanted one installed. They went to a local shop and had them install one all the way to the drip rail rather than as the General did it. It eliminated the need for the special trim. I saw that car at one of the Yenko reunions, and it looked pretty good. I always felt the 69 vinyl top looked a little funny.

If you want the stock look, watch ebay for the trim pieces...they seem to be reasonable on there. The stock trim pins were stud welded to the roof. I would find someone to do that rather than take a chance on water leaks with the screw on replacements.

Sheeze. Funny? Well, thinking back, when the 69 came out, I thought the wheelwell design looked a littly funny. But these cars sorta grow on ya.

Just my .2, but I think vinyl tops add alittle class to the car. What color is your car now?

David, nice car.... I think your car would look sweet with a vinyl top.

I was a vinyl top car and I threw all the chrome away just didn't think there was a desire for vinyl though my brother likes vinyl and tried to get me to stay vinyl. He had a silver #s matching Z with a vinyl top in the early 70s and he still wants me to put the door handles and locks back on my car.Hes an old school and original type guy and theres nothing wrong with that.

Its getting close I'm thinking about going back to the original look silver 307 vinyl top look just for him.Give me some time to put my car back to its original look and I'll post some.

As for taking the top to the drip rail I bet the drip rail molding would be a b@#ch[and thats not beach] to put on. What does the molding do around the back and how do you tie it into the drip rail or is this the fold look.If I did like vinyl I think it would have to be original looking TEHO.........

I don't know the details, but Brian at Super Car Workshop did the resto, and would gladly help. You could call him at (724) 532-1975, or PM him over at Yenko.net.

Thanks guys for all of the information. I'm still thinking about it. The thing that worries me is getting the trim clips put on correct. It looks so nice with the vinyl top. My '69 is black with the white SS side stripe.
