Default BBC head comparison....781's -vs- 049's

Getting ready to do that RV cam swap in my tow vehicle that you guys helped me with. It's a '73 454. When I popped the valve covers, I was sure I was going to find the old 781's that I always seem to see on a 454. Instead, I found '73 049's. Couldn't really find much on stan weiss's site and mortec just listed the 781's with 118cc chamber, 256/114cc ports and the 049's with 122cc chamber, 255/119cc ports. Except for the chamber cc difference, are these heads basically the same, or is there a chance that the 049's are a better head? Don't they both have 2.06/1.72 valves?

I'm asking because if the 049's are for some reason a better flowing head, I'd rather swap with my extra 781's and use the 049's for an up in coming project that's going to have a much bigger cam. Any thoughts in always appreciated! thanks

The 781 and the 049 are virtually identical, both great heads. They like bigger valves 2.19 & 1.88 and a little bowl work Lots of the guys at Team Chevelle run 10s with these heads.

I did a little bit more research and found a website that had a flow chart. They claimed that the 049's flowed the best out of the 3 early large oval heads. They also said, like you, that they like a 2.19/1.88 valve arrangement. Thanks!

If you want more info on them just go over to the team Chevelle site and do a search seems like 3/4 of the guys over there are running big blocks!

I have ran both heads. I found that the 781 being an open chamber, made better power than the 049. With both motors having flat top pistons. The 049 gave me a bit more compression, but the 781 motor ran 3 to 4 tenth better in the 1/4 mile.

WOW!

A flat-top pistoned 454 w/ either heads and .020" thick shims will be down in the 7.9 to 8 to 1 CR. range imho.. No higher than 8.5!

And you have to cc the suckers to REALLY know what your CR. is going to be!!!!!!

How could it have had more compression with the 049's when they are 122cc and the 781's are 118cc????

The set I had the 781s were 119cc and the 049 were 98cc I had them
cc'ed by a local shop. That was the numbers they gave me. The 049s were milled 30.

Travis, are you sure you have the casting numbers right? Both 781's and 049's are open chamber and they're virtually identical. Sounds like the ones you're calling 049's are a closed chamber head.

Gary you are right, I must have had my numbers wrong. I apologize for any wrong info I may have given on this thread. I did have 781s, but I also had a set of closed chamber big oval, that were eather 702s or 802s that I (thought) were 049.
Thanks for the corect info..This site will keep you on your toes.

Oh great Travis....because of your mis-information, I just traded my 049 heads for a set of spark plugs!!!!! Now what should I do?????

I have the 702's on my 460 and they work quite well. I don't mind the open chambers on the 049's because it will allow me to piston match my next build to get the exact CR I want. Thanks guys.

ROTFLMAO!!!

I actually have a very nice pair of 702's that have had bronze guides installed and have been cut for bigger valves with the valve job roughed in. I'm trying to figure out what to do with 'em, don't have any current 454/496 projects...do you think I could maybe swap 'em for one of those cool little hula girls for my dashboard???

I am sorry about the sparkplug thing. If we meetup at a show, I'll buy you a beer. The heads I had were 702. I still think the 781s are a better head. They make good power up to about 7000. Thats just my (OPINION).....
