Default Heads

Just purchased a set of double hump heads for my 68 Camaro 327/210 hp engine.
Should I go with 2.02/1.60 valves or stay with 1.94/1.55. I will also add 1 5/8 headers, 650 cfm carb , intake and cam. Any ideas on cam would be helpful.

I wouldn't spend to much on the heads, just leave in the small valves.

Use a Comp Cams Magnum 270 with the Double Hump Heads. I would rebuild the heads with new Valve Springs, and upgrade to the 2.02/1.60 valves. While you are at it, replace the original timing chain with an Edelbrock Steel Double Timing Chain and Sprocket Kit. Use a MSD 8360 with Blaster 3 Coil and you will have one nice setup. Just make sure the bottom half is in good shape with no issues first.

For what you are doing the small valves will be just fine. Most likely not 10 hp difference if that.

If they need work.
I would buy a set of new Vortec heads.
They out flow any camel hump or peanut hump heads. Plus the seats are already hardened. Two cents thrown.

Smile Re: Heads

As has allready been stated, keep the 1.94 smaller valves. My engine builder says there is not enough space, between the valves with 2.02's, and they crack there. As for a cam, a a Comp cams 268H or a Voodoo 60103. It is very easy to overcam that 327. If you go with better heads, then you can go with a bigger cam.

Camel humps came w/1.72 1.94 & 202" from the factory.

They do have a tendancy to crack if you overheat your engine.

No, only 1.94" and 2.02".

I thought they came w/ 1.72's also, but I think only heads like the old -290's do beside's the earlier heads that were ALL small-valved??

Try here..

I have taken camel hump heads off of a 66 327 impala & they had 1.72" valves in them. Maybe that was a fluke?

how many different head castings are there out there that people call "camel back" or "camel hump" heads?
it seems like everyone has a set of them, and if they are for sale, they all seem to be "corvette" or "fuelie" heads..

At first glance, some people have mistaken the markings on the 1.72 heads as double hump. The shapes are similar, but different.

I have a set of double hump heads ( 461's ) and have put over $500 of machine work to get them to match up to my XE268 cam. To make it short...for the biggest gain I have put hardened seats in it and changed the exhaust valves from 1.5 to 1.6..that is an old circle track trick to improve low end torque...also It will get the exhaust gasses out of the motor quicker.

Screw in studs guide plates and ported intake runners for better flow. I agree with most people that you just can not bolt on heads and make it work without doing some homework. I have read many a post about mismatching parts and in the end you will not be happy with the results. My 02.

Also from the SBC Head Chart they List the 461, 462, 291 and the 186 Heads that are the "Fuelie" "double hump" "Turbo" and the 'powerpack' heads. all of which are 64cc heads.

There are many opinions about whether to use old "cast" heads or go with modern heads...It all boils down to personal preference and what you are trying to build and what you intend to do street/strip.

The camel hump heads are way over rated, they do not flow much. It is not worth machining them for screw in studs, guide plates etc. The amount of money it costs to make them like aftermarket heads, you could have already bought a set of aftermarket heads with better chambers, thicker castings, and better flow.

A nice set of aftermarket 2.02 heads will make a ton more hp. If you are ready to head down that path then the heads is where you want to spend the money. Pick your heads first then choose a cam. The cam needs to match the flow of the heads.

Fwiw, the double-hump heads intake ports are like right around 158-160 or so CC's vs 283 Power Pack heads that are down around 137 cc's!

My old, '56, 265, -306, sparkplug trough heads cc'd at 118-120 cc's intake port so are definately little-bitty buggers!

And my 305HO, -601's cc'd at 160 cc's!

There is a way to differentiate Vette camels from Camaro units... On this site search "Camel Hump Heads Camaro or Vette" and the response from a noted NCRS judge "JohnZ" This info will, I am sure, reduce the number of bogus Corvette Hump heads that supposedly everyone has... Interesting read and very informative... T.
