So for a graduation present, my parents bought me a 67 Camaro that I am working on making a bit better quality/performance/drivability wise. I did a bit of work on the exterior and interior as far as restoration and now have come to the part where I am pondering a radio. I like some of the headunits at BestBuy, etc. but could not find a mounting kit for a 67 Camaro (standard trim). How would I fit this in the car/wire it up? Has anyone done a DIY on this? Sorry, new to the forums and haven't found it through searching .

It won't fit in the dash. Either the glove box (with an IF repeater) or under the dash (ugly) are where they usually end up.

Wiring it up is the easy part. The mounting is hard.
If you can get an old school style stereo/cassette with knob type controls, you can prob mount it in the factory location.
If it's a cd player, then you have 2 choices:
butcher/cut up the factory location and figure out how to mount it solidly, or glove box mount.

Do they still make cassettes?

What is the recommended way to do it? Is it really that hard to mount in the stock dash? Anyone got any kits or recommendations on how to fit one in there? Anyone got a link to kits for the dash or glovebox?

A square peg won't fit in a round hole (without cutting or a rfbh). The radios for our cars used two shafts for the dials and a center display area. The modern DIN's are rectangular and won't fit. There are aftermarket radios made for our cars. You can check out www.customautosound.com, or there are places that will rebuild an old radio.

The other option, as mentioned, is to mount the radio in another location (glove box, trunk, under seat) and use an rf repeater.

Really think hard about it and do some research prior to deciding to cut the dash. There's lot's of threads on here of people asking how to fix a dash that's been cut. Unfortunately, not a lot of answers.

first off, you're very lucky to get such a cool car like that!

I'll post pics later. Just detailed the car and it totally made the pad black from all the grime. I got some of the light swirls out, but I don't have stong enough polish to get the intense swirls out. Car looks great, and yes my dad did choose a good car for a present.

Another set of questions... Should I get kickpanel speakers or put 6x9's in the back? How hard is it to put it in the kick panels? How hard for the rear? What is the recommended headunit from Custom Autosound? Will I need an aftermarket amp? Can I buy just about any speaker I want? Is the Retro Sound better than the custom Autosound?

I have the Custom Autosound USA-1. I was not real happy with it when I first installed it. The controls feel cheap and the sound was not that good. I have since added amps and a sub-woofer and now the sound is great. I understand they have improved on the product since I purchased mine. I don't know anything about retro sound.

Putting 6x9's in the rear shelf is pretty easy, although your package tray may not have cut-outs, but that's just a piece of fiberboard should you need to replace it. Speakers in the kick panel is much more difficult, although many people do it. You have space & clearance issues to deal with. I don't know how 67 kick panels differ from my 68 though. I currently don't have any front speakers, but it's on the to-do list.

I like the retrosound's looks better IMO. I like the modern/classic look as opposed to just straight classic. But that's just me .

Very clean car though, wish mine looked that good .

I have the customaudiosound , the fisrt ones were not very good but they have improved Mine has a mp3 player port so Ipods are used all the time. The watts are up ther now too. It fits the original dash mount.

I think a while back I remember seeing a Kenwood made to fit in our dash. It has a Bowtie on the front. I may have seen it in a Fire Wheel Classics catalogue. I'll check when I get home. Nevermind, here is a link to one.
