Curious to see if the pro's find anything unusual about the tag or the car. With all the "fake tag" posts seen in here, just curious of this forum's opinion on my tag, and how they would decode.

Looks like a real tag to me. Do you know the VIN number of the car?
12C is the third week of December '68. 723 is the dark green standard interior. 57 57 is Fathom Green. X66 is SS 396 without the style trim group.

It has a BV code axle stamped for Dec 19 How do you tell it was Dec 1968 from the trim tag? It has a very factory looking single fuel line and fuel pump pickup (I changed to a new fuel tank) http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...6/P1000247.jpg Had someone I would consider very reputable tell me it was a fake as it has a 120mph speedo, and no tach....his theory was you could not order an L78 without a tach.

120mph speedo is correct. A 140 was available with a COPO option (not sure if even available on L78s), but 120 would be standard. Tach was not mandatory. If it was originally a console gauge car, it would have to have a tach in the dash. If no console gauges, it would have a center fuel gauge if it also had a tach.

Was the 140mph Speedo COPO option available outside of 427 cars?

Not per the CRG. It needed to be a double COPO with the sports car conversion (9737) to get the 140 speedo. Scroll down to the "other COPOs" section in the link below.

If you can confirm that the single fuel line is original, that absolutely means L-78. 140 speedo was part of the COPO 9737 package, which I believe only has been found in combination with COPO 9561 iron block 427. All of Yenko's 69s were double COPOs, and a few of other dealers (most notably Berger) were double COPOs.
FYI, tpwards the end of the 68 model year, Yenko was purchasing L-78s with COPO 9737, and dropping in L-72. Not all were converted, so a few were sold as an L-78, and included the 140 speedo. Very cool IMO. There was one guy who bought a non-converted 68 at Kenny Ross Chev, a Pittsburgh dealer through dealer transfer. He dropped in an L88 and stuck the L78 in his garage. After a few years, he sold his Camaro, but believe it or not, held onto the L-78. About 5-6 years ago, he located and purchased his original car. He passed away a year or so ago, and I think the car has been sold. I think it sold at near-COPO prices!! Now that's really cool. |

Thanks..I appreciate the feedback, In what I have read I have not found anything to support his claim...scary as this is the gentleman that did the appraisal for insurance. I was not crazy about his statements, but I liked the number that came back in his appraisal!

Going back to the 140mph speedo comment - I do remember an article in Hemmings Muscle Machines magazine (looking for the issue) that talked about a restored 1969 L78 that although had no documentaion was believed to be an original Sports Car Conversion based on having a 13/16" front roll bar and the 140 mph speedo. I haven't seen anything outside of that article but find it interesting that there might have been a few L78 that had the option although there is no documentation to support this.

140 MPH speedometer was not an option. The COPO 9737 package was not an option. Not options in the normal sense as in RPOs.

Either the article was incorrect (not the first time) or it was a 68.
In 69, COPO9737 included 13/16" swaybar, and 15" Rally wheels. In 68, I think (not positive) the swaybar was 1". |
