I'm getting ready to put my crank back in my 454. It's been awhile since I've done this and I can't remember the trick the guys down at the speed shop showed me a few years back. It seems to me that you start with the center main cap and work your way out.....but I can't be sure.
How many thousands end play should I have?? Where is the best place to measure the end play?? Thanks! |

To set the rear main thrust bearing, torque 1 through 4 caps to spec, but only torque the rear to fingertight.
Use a large screwdriver between a counterweight and one of the main caps to force the crank rearward then forward then rearward a couple of times, then hold forward while you torque the rear cap to spec. Maximum end play is about 0.007".

I torque all the caps down to like 20 pounds or so and then use a hard wood block and a BFT, 1st by whacking the front of the cranks snout like 2 or 3 times backwards.
Then I repeat from the rear. This squares the thrust flange to the thrust bearing faces, all the while spinning it to make sure nothing binds up! I then continue torquing in steps like regular, again, spinnning the crank to check for binding. She binds up, it's time to line-hone her, imho. pdq67 |
