So I was reading around here, and I happen to notice quite a few people who have dipped into the 11's on their cars.
What exactly is needed to do this? Smalllblock? Big Block? I would really like to keep it small block if possible. What are some suggestions on the setup I could try? I am building a new motor this winter, and would like to price everything out. I want it to be reliable enough to cruise around in. Run on pump gas [91/93 octane] Can it be done? What kind of combo am I looking at building? |

Well, I plan on hitting the 11's this season, so I guess I can chime in. Until I get my slip, I guess I am a poser, but it is easier than ever to get in the 11's. An mild big block with heads and a cam could do it. The aftermarket small block heads currently available make big power pretty attainable. I would suggest a 383 with AFR heads, a hydraulic roller cam, and a 3000ish ATI, BTE, etc. converter.
There are some great combos on this site. Search and take a peek at some of them. Mine: 400 '509' block 2 bolt main 10.3:1 Aluminum Canfield 195 cc CNC chamber bowl blended heads 239/249 @ .050 278/288 .550 lunati solid flat tappet Edelbrock RPM intake 750 speed demon mechanical secondaries Mallory 140 pump HEI w/ 50,000 volt coil Mallory box 1 3/4" headers 2 1/2" Torque Tech exhaust w/ Flowmasters (cutouts also) TH400 w/ TransGo manual valvebody BTE 3400-3800 converter 12 bolt posi 3.90 275/60R/15 mickey thompson DR's Koni SPA-1 front shocks 6 cyl front springs Monos w/ traction bars Heading to the track in a few weeks It had a very mild 350/ TH350 combo in it before, and the car is just freakishly different the difference is night and day |

Mild Bigblock.
Large Smallblock. Start with what you have and make it bigger.

Like others have said, a small block will do it easy if it is a larger one. You need great heads and some converter will help a lot. I ran 11.74 with:
406- stock crank and rods, 9.5:1 AFR 195 heads Edelbrock performer RPM cam- 234/244, .488/.510 hydraulic flat Performer RPM intake Holley 750 DP 3.73 gears, 4200 stall Nothing fancy. I went to hydraulic roller and dropped another half second. Have fun!

Lonnie67 and I have run 11's with 383's....
Both of us have Edelbrock Performer RPM heads that we have owned for several years, we both have over 10:1 compression and soild cams in the 240'ish duration with a little better than .500 lift. Lonnie ran 11's with his old setup which was about 9.5:1 compression and a hydraulic cam with 230'ish duration.

My car's a 4-speed, not an auto so I dont need a converter...
I am really against swapping in an automatic, even if it makes me a bit faster.. It took me forever to find a 4-speed car.. and to me its a LOT more fun to drive 4-speed than auto... and I bought the car to have fun.. I just want something I can cruise around in, and take to the track once in a while.. Streetable/reliability definitely takes precedence over 1/4 mile time though, since it will only see the track a few times per summer maybe. |

Lonnie67 uses his camaro as his daily driver....so I suppose that's as reliable as you can get.

Greg....That 1/2 second drop swapping to the HR cam is REALLY tempting to do over the winter! Are combos are very similar.....
