99% of the stuff you find in crayon/grease pencil on top of paint on the firewall is "restoration graffiti" added by people who have seen too many eBay auction photos. Styling did NOT want to see kindergarten scrawling when the hood was opened.

No marks on my 69 when new except the PTB's. (still there) Bet that ebay car has a 'Caution Fan' too.

Watch out! We're a bunch of show-offs. The last guy that asked for engine pictures is still sorting through them. And that was a year ago!

leave the chalk marks to the COPO guys and Mopar and Corvette freaks and build the car the way it was intended- without any UAW worker scribbling on the firewall.

I will say this; most writing on the firewall was written on the bare sheetmetal. Over the years, the blackout paint would wear off/fall off of the grease pencil markings, leaving the impression that they were written on top of the paint. Some markings, like paint codes, obviously were written on top of the blackout paint.

Ive chalked up a firewall, but that was upon request of the owner of the car. They weren't made up, they were on the firewall under the black. I have found one mark that was actually over the black, the reasoning isnt completely known.

Stepping into mine field........ My 68 is original and unrestored. I bought it from the original owner family. My car has PTB on both the drivers side and passenger side just at the top of the firewall. It also has yellow crayon writing just above the heater box that say's 625 or G25. It also has this on the back side of the valance in black. This is all I have noticed as I have never had the car apart. I tried figuring out what it meant but the closet thing I could come up with was that my cars paint code is G2. Don't know what the 5 means and don't know if this is correct. I do know that these are there and I have no reason to doubt were on the car when it left the factory.

Just my .02

I agree. Better to under-do it than over do it.

the marks were assembly line aids- nothing more, nothing less.
i bet there's a few cars running around out there with naughty words in crayon in hidden areas that were left there as a joke for they guys down the line.
i don't see why people would even want to put them back on a car.
