Default Removing HB with stripped pulley threads

Got a quick tech question, noticed some wobble in the pulleys and discovered that the PO stripped out the 3 pulley threads on the harmonic balancer. One bolt was already MIA. Not sure how he got washers behind the generator pulley but they fell out when the pulleys were removed.

I have a traditional 3 bolt harmonic balancer puller, but its little use with stripped threads on the balancer. Anyone ever use a 3 jaw puller to remove an HB, I don't have one that big, but if it will work I'll try and find one. Or some other ideas I'd greatly appreciate.

Thanks!!!

Dave

If you try to use the 3 jaw puller to pull the harmonic balancer on the outside of the HB it will only pull the outside ring of it off and leave the inner still on the crank. This way you would have to pull the inner part off with the 3 jaw puller too. Just be carefull not to damage the center bolt hole in the crank if you are using it. Also you might be able to tap the bolt holes to a larger size and pull it off with the HB puller.

Get longer bolts and put a washer and nut behind the h/bal. All Gr 8 hdwe.
Then, you can exchange the h/bal for a new one since the one installed is how old?
And so is the rubber between the inner hub & outer ring.

If you get 5/16" bolts long enough to go all the way through it will be easier get the nuts and washers on the back side.

Tap the holes for the next larger thread, use larger diameter bolts.

Guys thanks so much for the ideas. Putting a nut on the other end I never thought of. I also have a 3 jaw puller I can invert the tines on and make it pull from the center. That may work too. Now I just need to pull some stuff out of the way to get a puller in there. I can put the bolt in the center without the washer to protect the crank threads.

Thanks so much for the help!!!!!

The HB looks original to the '70 Camaro motor. I will most likely find an OEM like replacement. Summit makes one with fine timing marks, may end up that way.

Thanks for the tips guys, put nuts on the end and it came off like a piece of cake. Now to find a 6.75 by 1.25 thick balancer to go back on and a set of pulleys that run true .

Thanks again!!

Dave

The 67-68 Z28 deep groove crank pulleys are still available from GM, and reasonable if you're thinking new.

I have a connection at year one, going to take all the parts up there next week and match them up. Mine had the single pulley under the other power steering pulley. It looks like the center bolt was really holding it together. Then I guess the bent pulley stressed out the power steering bracket and broke that.

Pretty sure they carry all the GM Repro stuff.

Thanks again, till the next little project. Looks like I need to work on tranny lines and fuel lines next.
