Is anyone using a K&N filter? Is there a noticeable differnce in power compared to a conventional air filter? They claim that one will gain up to 17% more HP.

I put one on last year.I did'nt notice any thing except about $35 dollars missing from my wallet.It looks good though,red element instead of white.Lasts forever so you can save $ if you keep your car long enough.17% H.P. increase,no way!

i put one on and i have to agree with 67drake. reuseable feature is nice, but no seat of the pants power gain.

I put a 14x4 on my El Camino, I noticed a slight increase in power on the top end, but thats about it. The nicest feature is that it lasts forever.

I used one this past season dirt track racing, and upon engine disassembly, I found dirt and grit build up on the top of my intake valves. So I know they allow good air flow, but dirt is a little hard on the valve seats.

It takes x-amount of air to burn y-amount of fuel. Most carburetted engines revolve around a stoichiometric A/F ratio, which is the chemically correct mixture of air-to-fuel to promote 100% complete combustion, for gasoline it is usually around 14.5/1. Anything below this fiqure is considered rich and above is lean. Considering the air filter is inherently a restriction placed on air flow (never, ever under any circumstances operate an engine without one) the amount of gas that can be "effectively" consumed is dictated by the amount of airflow. By increasing the airflow capablities of the engine, the amount of fuel that can be consumed is increased as well. So increase your jet sizes some and see if you notice an improvement. The extra air is going out the exhaust where it could be used to burn more gas, which results in more power.

I'm not saying it did'nt work,I like my K&N filter,The question was "is there a noticeable difference",on mine there was'nt,on a dyno,with a re-jetting of the carb.,maybe there would be.I still say 17% increase is being optomistic,unless you take the potato out of your tailpipe at the same time.

Thanks for your help & opinions. I went ahead and purchased a 14x4 K&N filter along with changing over to AC rapid fire spark plugs. Oh yeah,I also removed the potatos from the tailpipes. Between the three,I noticed a smoother idle and more responsive acceleration. It also seems to have a noticeable increase in power after 2500 rpm. But definatly not a claimed 17% increase. Even with the two changes made, I would say a 3-5% overall increase may have been gained.

I really worry about the large gaps in the cotton matrix. I have yet to see any claims about air cleaning ability.Did you ever hold one up to a light and visualize all that grit passing through and destroying your engine?

I just added a K&N to my '92 RS along with a Hypertech chip. I have noticed more top end throttle response and my 305 runs alot smoother. $35 out of pocket expense yes but if it adds any HP I'll take it.
