I've got a '73 camaro with a small block in it. Right now I'm running an edelbrock torker II low rise intake with an edelbrock 600 on it, and a 3 inch drop air cleaner.
I have under hood insulation on the car right now and it's a press fit....you can see the smashed outline of the air cleaner in the insulation. I'm looking to pull out the hood insulation in hopes of giving me just a tad more clearance. I'd like to know what others are running for aftermarket intake/carb/air cleaner combinations that fit under the flat (no cowl) stock hood of their 2nd gen camaros. From what I see at edelbrock, it appears I should be able to get a performer RPM under that hood, but I just don't see how it will fit. Perhaps some air cleaners drop more than others...or perhaps even carb heights are a bit different. Thanks in advance for any info.

I ran the Edelbrock Performer RPM under the flat hood of my 71 RS without any clearance issues. I can not recall the exact breather I used but it did not drop down around the carb too far if I recall correctly.

Thanks JediJawa for the info. Do you recall what kind of carb you were running? Apparently there are some minor carb height differences. I'm just pressed already with my low rise torker II, edelbrock carb and drop cleaner. glad to hear you were able to get a performer rpm stuffed under there. Did you have any under hood insulation?

Me too, w/holley 650. Some drop to the AC base, and a 3" AC

I did not have any hood insulation so not sure how close that was. I do remember checking clearance with some putty and had decent enough clearance that torque twist did not cause interference. I was using a Holley 4150 body @ 650 CFM. If I had to venture a guess of the past I'd say it was a 3" breather element with a recessed retainer nut.
Hope the vague recollections are useful in some way!

If your looking for another single plane I have a Weiand Team-G and it is freaking sweet.
It's about as tall as my old edel performer but a single plane, it may fit your stock hood??? I have seen people just run flame retarders with no air cleaners for a quick fix, wouldn't recomend it. I wouldn't pull the hood insulation I would bet your hood paint would get faded much more quickly.

We have a performer RPM with Demon carb on our 73 Camaro. Clearance is good, our insulation pad is cut out around the air cleaner.

It could be the carb. I had a Edelbrock 750, and a regular drop base air cleaner would not fit without a spacer. The air cleaner hit the fuel line inlet and the accelorator pump.
With a 1 inch spacer it cleared, but crowed the hood. |
