Hi guys,
Looks like my heater core is shot and I was wondering if I could swap it out with a big block heater box and core or are there other part for the duct that needs to be switched. I run fab valve covers and there is like NO room as it is for the hoses. Thank you

you can buy a bb core and firewall cover to convert from sb heater layout.

Do I actually need to take the cover off to replace the core or is that done from the inside ? I have a feeling that when I installed the hoses i had to bend the tubing a little cause it was hitting the valve cover thats what might be cause in the leak

The Big Block Cover / Core moves the inlets out towards the fender where the small block is closer to the engine.
You would need to pull both the cover and the core to swap them out. It is easiest to replace the core by taking the heater box out from inside (under the dash). But if you are changing out from a SB to a BB the cover on the firewall would need to be changed as well. Hope this helps. There is a number of threads on the install/removal of heater boxes, just do a search. |

You can pull the heater box and convert it to a BB core with no problem. One retention clip needs a slight modification. The blower box needs to be modified for the BB core tubes. While it can be done with the cover in the car, it is much easier with it out. A 3/4 inch hole saw is needed as well as a cover for the new holes (many catalogs call it an adapter). A seal kit will also be needed. it probably needs seals anyway.

I swaped mine over from a sb heat core to a bb heater core by only removing the inside box. Left the outside box on and drilled the new holes from inside the car, after some very careful measurements, of course. Came out nice, used closed cell black foam over the old holes from the inside. Actually made a adapter/cover that cost me less than a quarter (scrap/left over 1/8 stainless steel plate) and a couple stainless self tapping screws. More of that black closed cell foam again. Hope that helps/.
