Thanks to John Calvert's advice I finally have the car hooked up and am getting some good data (went from 17 to 21lbs. on the Drag Radials).
I swapped out my stock GM HEI a month ago for a Pertronix set-up and thought it picked me up but needed more data to confirm it. Well, this weekend we got some better air and the distributor has definitley picked me up. My guess is about .05 which really surprised me. My old bests in my signature were on a day the DA was -250ft. Friday the air was 980ft. 1.471 60ft. 7.073 @ 96.486 The NHRA correction factors show about a 6.99-7.00 at sea level so I am looking forward to some even better air in October!

Yeah but he is trapping 96+ mph in the 1/8. But I think you would pick up mph if you had more converter cause that new cam you have is pretty stout!!

The old HEI had a welded up advance so it had 38 degrees from the turn of the ignition. I had to wire in a cutout switch to crank it.
The new dizzy has real loose springs with about 25 degrees at 1000 RPM and a full 38 by 2000.

Glad someone is having luck with the pertronix ignition system, haven't got mine figured out quite yet.

Good job Greg
![]() What do you think it was with the distributor that caused it to pick up? Something wrong with the HEI?

Ace, what kind of problems are you having? Did you buy the complete distributor?
Eric, I don't really know. The old HEI had a stock module and coil but it never "missed" so I can't figure it out. You hear that stock HEI's will drop off after 4500 RPMs but I assumed that meant it would start skipping or something. Maybe it just could not provide a strong spark at the higher RPMs? The only reason I switched the distributor is I got tired of the kill switch thing so I was real pleased that it picked up. Looking back, a buddy of mine switched to a Pertronix about 2 years ago and his car seemed to pick up. He didn't really track DA and e.t.s so much so it was just anecdotal evidence but I guess it's safe to say he had similar results.

Well, a strong spark will never hurt you -- that's for sure. I wonder if the HEI had a retard or fluctuation in timing at high speed.

I have had several HEI s up on the osiliscope over the yrs, get up around the 5500+ and the waves start to show signs of inconsistancy..
Or it could just be a bit worn in the bushes. The HEI was not a pure track dizzy, but a damn good street unit. Right tool for the right appilcation.
