Default Engines with block casting #3955272

Hello,

I have an engine with the casting# 3955272 and an original engine date code stamp that has a suffix of MQ. There is not VIN on the deck. I understand this block started production in September of 1968 according to Chevrolet by the numbers book.

This engine is currently in a '68 camaro. The build date of the car is April of '68. So I don't believe it's original to the car given the timing of the casting of the block, but I am trying to find out what it may have come out of.

MQ was used for COPO Chevelles in 1969 but I have not been able to find anything that would verify a 3955272 block used for a 427 COPO application. #3963512 seems to come up when MQ is plugged in and not 3955272. If you know of any examples where the 272 block has been found in a '69 COPO Chevelle please let me know.

1st question - Does anybody know of any '68 camaros built with the 3955272 blocks from the factory?

2nd question - Does anybody know of any '69 COPO Chevelles built with 3955272 blocks and not the 512's?

Appreciate anybody who can help solve this riddle. Thanks!

John

The 272 blocks were 396 blocks, so it's not a COPO block. According to my book, MQ is a 396/375 Block out of a Chevy II with a manual transmission. Look for the VIN stamp near the oil filter. ALso the casting date of the block would help. If you can find the VIN stamp, you may make some Nova owner very happy!

Here are photos of the engine block stamp, casting number, and casting date code. I think the casting date code is K 28 8? but let me know what you guys think. It's hard to make out the first letter and last year digit. I am trying to determine if the engine date stamp of T0411MQ could have been for April 11, 1968 or is it for April 11, 1969? Or something else? Thanks again for your expert help.

Here are photos.

Looks like someone did a horrible job of trying to recreate the original broach marks, and an equally horrible job at a restamp! The 272 block was only used from September, 1968 to June, 1969, so it's probably K 28 8 (November 28th, 1968). Is it at least a 4 bolt main block?

It's a 4 bolt main. It's from a car I was considering buying but probably not now. It is an interesting car in that it has 32K miles and looks it too, 4-speed muncie matching numbers (unless that was faked), and a BV 4:10 rearend gears. It looks to be original big block car with heater hoses running straight into firewall. How do you fake broach marks?

I have a 1969 impala with a 396 engine and it has a block code of 3955272. What does this mean?
