How does the price compare to a wood garage with say a block foundation.I think this would be my deciding factor.

Thanks Chris, I will send him a PM, his building looks like the same type of system.. I'm going to give them a call Monday cause I need to find out about wind load. We tend to have some high winds around here during hurricane season.


A 24WX40LX12.5H will cost me about 13K with shipping. I'm looking at about 5k for the slab and another 2k for electrical. Total cost +- 20K. If I go this route I will be installing it myself.

I priced the stick built for the same size and it will cost me in the neighborhood of 26-30K....

Still a tossup but I like the idea of doing my own work. (And saving some money of course)

Doesnt look like it can be insulated easily. Something you need out here in the north east.

One thing to keep in mind is all the electrical will be exposed where wood the wire can be run in the wall.This may up your electrical cost because all wire will have to be pulled in conduit...JMO....

If resale is a concern steel buildings are not as appealing to home buyers. People I know got a better price on steel buildings than stick built but when the time came to sell their spread, wood outbuildings were the preference to buyers. This factor is determined also on the landscaping, layout of the property and proximity to the main house. And overall "personality" of one's property.
You could order trusses and put up the walls yourself and have the trusses set. Straightforward construction. Run all the wires yourself and have your electrician hook up the subpanel if the tie in is an issue.
**I would strongly suggest putting in floor pots.** You will find them a godsend in many tasks. Easy to make and of course very easy to buy. Pour the floor thicker in pot areas naturally. Put in an I-Beam with a chain hoist. A step up is an H configuration for a twin axis hoist.

Can I recommend looking around for what we call pole barn builders. I built a 40 x 100ft pole barn with 16 ft side sheds on each side. The center of my shop is 14 ft tall, uses metal trusses, 4 x 6 posts, 2 x 6 runners, also has two 14 x 14 roll up doors and two entrance doors. The main 40 x 100 is fully enclosed the side sheds are open. With the concrete floor I have $24,000 in the building. It was started and completed in 6 days. Just an idea.
