Default Another big block swap question

I took out my 383 to put in a 454 and replaced the frame stands with bb ones but I used my old sb engine mounts (rubber interlocking ones) and it bolted in fine BUT I'm trying to use some tall fabricated valve covers and one hits the booster, alot.

Do I need bb engine mounts? I have the stands on the correct sides. I have these covers:

I doubt the correct engine mounts will help if you've got tall valve covers. There isn't much room between the stock valve cover and the brake booster originally. You'll probably have to swap to short valve covers, or go wth a smaller brake booster.

I Know bunch of people that have BB and the tall covers won't fit with the stock booster. You have 3 options. Smaller booster, short valve covers or hydroboost. The small valve covers may be the way to go. I had a stock booster that I replaced with a 8" one . Ever since I did that my brakes sucked. I have 12-13" of Vac. I since went with hydroboost and it's the best thing I ever did. I never drove a car that stops as well.

Thanks guys. I'll probably put some small covers on then later get Hydroboost.

Patrick, The engine mounts for a 302 or a 350 are the same as a Big Block. The frame mounts (stands) are what is different. You said you all ready changed to Big Block frame mounts so, you are good to go. Tall valve covers just won't fit in a stock situation.

Smile Re: Another big block swap question

I had to install short valve covers on my 496 and I had NOS BB frame stands and Poly motor mounts b/c my cheap chrome tall one's wouldn't fit under my manual brake M/C!!

A bummer by me..

If I had it to do over, I would have bought '67 rip-a-part stock 6-banger/350 rubber mounts and drilled a 3/8" hole through each one, 45 degree countersunk one side and bolted them together w/ Grade-8 stuff and be done w/ it b/c they are really SHORT suckers that will give you the max hood/M/C clearance!

And I did this to my stock rubber mm's after I ripped both of them apart way back then before GM sent out the mm recall letter and I used them on my 350SS, my junk301 and my hopped up 409 "W" engine fine!!

That depends on what "style" of tall valve covers being used. Here are 2 examples of tall aftermarket valve covers that fit just fine, even with raised exhaust port heads and aftermarket roller rockers.BB frame mounts as well........

Current aftermarket tall valve covers on same raised exhaust port heads...

Correct me if I am wrong, but those don't look like "stock" master cylinders. The key word is STOCK !

Skip, I just saw a pic of your old engine and the booster. It looks the same size as mine. I am putting a stock cover on tomorrow to see how close it will be to my booster and compare it to yours in the pic. I will post a pic tomorrow and let you know and hopefully we can find out if your covers will fit.

Apparently my brake booster is the problem. I replaced it not too long ago and it was the same diameter as the one I took off. There is NO WAY ANY tall valve cover will fit under this booster, it is HUGE. Much bigger than the ones in the above pics. BTW thanks for those pics . I will get some pics to show yall my booster tomorrow.

I'm wondering if any aftermarket tall valve covers are notched to clear the power brake booster??

This is the pic I just saw and was comparing mine with. Do you know if the BB frame stands are taller? If so, no tall valve cover will fit with that booster. It is the same one I have. I will post a pic tomorrow with a stock cover on and show you how close it is.

Your car does not have a problem because it does not have power brakes.

It is the booster that interferes not the master cylinder.
