Default 882 sbc heads??

Are the 1974 dated 882 heads any good? I am starting to build a motor for my 68 RS and have a set that will need gone thru, but I hate to spend any money on them if they are junk. The car will just be a driver and I dont want to spend alot on it but would like to see 275-300 hp at the crank.

I figured I would do a

Flat top .030 over 350 with a tiny little 420/442 Hydro cam, Edelbrock preformer intake & 600 holley.

Any thoughts? I do have a set of 69 441x castings laying around I could swipe the valves out of the 882 castings and use if they are better??

Thanks in advance

Nick,
If they need work, dont waste your time on them. You can get a set of Vortec heads, or aftermarket heads for the same price as it will cost you to get the 882's back in good shape.

I don't think you can find Vortecs anywhere for the price of a valve job plus some. Although I would recommend vortecs over the 882's and the 441's ANYDAY. Just don't think you will find them anywhere ready to run for less than $500

if you do decide on rebuilding you should check some books on the 441X. seems like i read somewhere it has even bigger combustion chambers then the regular 441. you might look for some used vortecs. they have been out there since 96 now. the only problem is you have to invest in a new intake.

http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm
3932441....69-70...350..........76cc chambers
3932441X...69-70...350/400......80cc chambers

Those heads (882) will make the power your after but they are junk, anytime you have a head that the heat cross over gets into both exhaust ports it not a good ideal, the 441 head would be a better choice. Im not real big on that cam either.

What engine and at what CR?

I ask b/c maybe a set of early -186's or -041's will do. And they have bolt holes in the ends and also are 64 cc's.

Hearsay has it that the '882 heads are 1.94 intake valve size, with HARDENED seats (which make it an advantage over the earlier heads), with a moderate combustion chamber size... 72 cc? If he blocks off the heat crossover, what is the problem wiht them?

I dropped everything off at the machine shop this morning. He said he would surface, all install new guides, valve job & a set of Z/28 springs in the 441's for 240.00 so I desided to go that route. Going to have him polish the crank and Recondition the rods R&R the new flat tops while he is at it. He seemd to think I would make around 9.25 - 1 with those heads and pistons although I think he is a bit optimistic. With any luck I will get everything back by the weekend & I can assemble the motor.

All in all if I can end up close to 9-1 it should be close to what I was after.

Thanks again,

I agree the vortecs are a better way to go but I had already bought an intake and already had the 441 heads, plus I am on a very tight budget with this build. If I am not mistaken, these are the same heads that came on the LM-1 and it was factory rated @ 255 HP. I was only looking for between 275 - 300 HP so I if I can pick up another 20 - 30 HP from the cam, intake & exhaust combo the set up will be right inline with what I had hoped for.

Down the road I can always swap the top end but for now I just want to get the car on the road.

I can't sell the set I have for $200. Mine have about 3-4000 miles on them. My 350 ran great with them except it ran out of steam around 4500 rpm. I had a performer cam and manifold at the time. Probably made about the same power your looking at.

Go with what you have it will make a nice street motor. The 441s are what they used on the 255 motors.Cam , headers and intake should put you right in the 275 to 300 range.
