Hello all,
I drove my car for the first time in about a year and a half and while I was driving home from work the other day and noticed while I was going up a fairly steep hill, my car started shuttering and seemed to lose power while putting out a cloud of black smoke out the tailpipes. BTW, my car is a 1967 Camaro with a 350 and a 700R4, Holley 4160 Thanks in advance |

What's your name racer? It sounds like your trans didn't down shift and as you went up the hill the load increased and you gave it more gas, the secondaries opened and fuel just blew out your tail pipes as you lugged your 350... Go back to the same hill and manually shift to 2nd and see what happens, then try it in 3rd and see how it deals with the hill...

I'm going to guess the mechanical advance in the distributor is not working!

Stale gas in the tank perhaps?
Carberator is getting gummed up and not properly atomizing the fuel? Ignition problems like carbon tracking in the cap, fouled plugs, or bad wires?

Check your float level as well, could be too high causing fuel to dump out the vents on an incline.

Hey Joe - If the others are correct and it's bad gas from sitting for so long take a good look under the hood for fuel leaks... Gas will turn to varnish and will destroy gaskets in the carb.

Joe...
You may also want to check the choke if it has one. Could be closing on you. Kev |

Along the same lines as stale gas. How many of you have had the gas dry up in the bowl and cause the float needle to leak and flood the engine. Sometimes they'll gush fuel all over the place when that happens.
There is an additive for fuel to help keep it from going sour - called Stabil. If you don't use your car all that much, you might want to put some in the tank. It's a good idea to start it up every couple of months to pump fresh fuel into the bowl and prevent carb problems, and charge the battery. The fuel these days doesn't seem to last long. Just a few months is all it takes for it to turn on you.
