Default PG or not to PG

I'd like to hear opinions and experiences on PG, 350TH, or 4 speed transmission conversions. I'm going crazy trying to decide what to do, so I'm asking for some advice.
I have a 67 ss rs with a 350 v8. I'm keeping it the original color, adding new shocks and springs and lowering the suspension about 2", adding new disk brakes, adding headers to the ORIGINAL rebuilt 350 V8. The car came w/o a tranny so I can pick and choose. The options I'm considering:
1) PG tranny to keep the drivetrain original
2) 350 TH because I like the idea of 3 speeds but conversion might be expensive and difficult and also involve the console.
3) Muncie 4 speed M-20 and same concerns as above.
Please advise, I'd like to hear your stories. The good ,the bad, the ugly.

If you have to buy a new tranny anyway make it a 4-speed. There's nothing like rowing the gears in a first generation.

I'd go with a TH350. They're much easier to find than a PG and you'll like the first gear better. You don't have to modify the console, the original PRNDL setup will work just fine.

Don't even consider the PG. They make whining noises and thwart your ability to spin tires unless you have a lot of power or 4.10 rear gears.

The TH350 is bolt in, easy weasy.

The 4 speed would be more fun, but also cost more when you add in pedals, linkage, shifer, clutch, flywheel, bell housing, console parts etc.

My choice would be a Tremec TKO 600. Your Camaro is one of the few body styles that this transmission will fit in without modifying the floor.

Get the best of both worlds, a 200r4, 4 speed overdrive, same size as the PG, dont have to cut the driveshaft, better first than a TH350, TV and shifter conversion readily available! I am going to put an 86 Monte SS 200r4 to replace my PG!

My choice too! I bought mine from Classic Motorsports Group this winter. The ice is gone but it is still cold enough there was no mud so I took it out for the first time. Very nice! Shifts very easy, quiet, and I like rowing through the gears!

I would think it depends on how much work you want to do.
If the car came with a PG, and to remove the lack of first gear ratio when compared to a TH350, install a looser convertor, say a 2400 stall or Sat Night Special. This convertor will level the field. Of course, you'll had to add an external cooler in series with the existing rad cooler.

As suggested, a TH350 with 6-inch tailshaft is a direct bolt-in and a 2400 stall convertor would wake it up also. Again, an additional cooler will be needed.

A TH200-4R is good, but you need a TH400 crossmember, I think. OE Driveshaft will install.

If going manual, you'll have to get pedals and the like since apparently, the car did not come with a std trans.

Most important, its your car and you need to decide for yourself to figure how & what you want to configure it.

I would go with a modern trans (w/overdrive)..... I would not convert it to a manual,
although I do like to shift thru the gears..........

The simplest bolt on would be a short shaft t350. They are common and cheap. They use the same driveshaft and crossmember as a powerglide. The 2004r is not a direct bolt in. (The t400 crossmember is close but not close enough (IMO) for an easy conversion.) 4 speeds, 5 speeds, 6 speeds are fun, but the final price, once installed, will be considerably more than installing a t350. Powerglides are no fun to drive in a street car.

An old guy around here had a favorite saying...."You just can't put a price on a good time" although, if you are like me, yes you can, you have to. It took me quite awhile before I was able to get the TKO 600.

I've been doing a lot of reading on this site today. Now I've got it down to the Th350 or the 2004r. The gears are 3.73 and what else could I do to get better hwy mileage if I went with the TH350?
Keep it going guys.

3.73 and a t350 wouldn't be much fun on the freeway. 3.73 and a 2004r is perfect. Plus lockup is nice also.

Tire height plays a role in rpm at highway speeds. If you don't have an overdrive transmission, taller tires or taller axle gear (3.55, 3.36 or 3.08) would help reduce your highway rpms.

I had a racing powerglide with a lower first gear and a transbrake. It was miserable on the street because 2nd gear takes forever to wind up. They're only good for racing in my opinion. High horsepower cars benefit from more consistent ET's with a glide.
