I currently have the heads off for a guide problem and would like to add some cheap performance to this engine by shaving the heads, using thin gaskets or putting 305 heads (that I have). Does anyone have practical experience to say this can improve Hp/torq from this engine without adverse affects ie ping.

You gota watch the compression ratio thing as well as quinch or squish dimension(deck height). Don't go much above 9.5 to 1 CR with todays gas or it won't be friendly to you at the gas pump when you gota add octane booster to keep it from knocking and stuff. pdq67

I want to get my CR up also, currently have felpro head gasket. Im going to try the copper gaskets first then if that isnt enough Ill consider milling the heads. Mabey angle milling as I mentioned in one of my other posts.
I think that by only changing your head gasket it shouldn't cause a problem such as pinging unless you ran into some really bad gas (where you might ping anyway- without the gasket change). You would think the engineers at GM would allow a buffer zone for all different grades of fuel; so by raising your comp. such a small amount, premium would all that would be called for. Just my .02
