The casting number won't tell you much, as we were told above, by David. The engine ID number or the VIN would tell us more.

Is it possible the B is really an 8? I think you have a 1978 truck engine, installed at the Fremont CA plant.

Heads are 353049 clearly 396. What car from 1973-1990 would have had this engine in it. Thanks

I agree with 69 z11. From your date code E29 8 it was manufactured May 29th of 1978.

The Heads are :353049....1970-73.................. 402/454....2.06.....1.72...... Open........113
OR................ 353049.....73-84...oval.............454......................... ....Open 122cc chamber, 255/119cc ports

What are the date codes on the heads ? - May not be original to the engine

As far as I know, there were not ANY big blocks put in cars, only pickups in 1978. the 10-35 was the older designation for 1/2 ton pickups to the 1 ton pickups. This is not a "Truck" block, but the "car" block that was used in the light duty pickups and cab and chassis units

The 049 heads are really good ones, maybe the best factory oval ports made. They are open chamber heads, never installed on a 396 from the factory, first produced in 73. Those heads with the 4 bolt block would make a really nice 496!

AFAIK, all BBC engines had that (PASS HI PERF) cast into the block.

No, most MK IV blocks are not marked that way. It might seem that way now, because we all we see are the HP blocks and the standard ones end up in the scrap yard. The HP blocks also have the oil cooler holes that the regular blocks didn't have.
