Is there going to be a problem painting in pieces ie. hood, fenders, deck lid using a pearl paint rather than painting the car together? I understand that using metallics you need to mix all the paint together in case one qt. has a different make up of metallic in it. Is pearl going to be the same way? If so, how about painting all the inner stuff first then assembling and painting the car as a whole. I'm worried about getting inside the gaps with coverage. Do you need to "clear" the inner stuff that will not be seen? Thanks in advance.

Pearl has to be fogged on and the entire car painted at the same time, or the consistency of the pearl will not be uniform from panel to panel. Painting pearl is not the same as metallic paint since it's an overlay, and if you try to paint one piece at a time it will look like Helen Keller painted it. Good painters can match metallic paint by changing air pressure @ the gun etc., but matching pearl in close to impossible for even the best (based on info from a friend who has done high end paint jobs for 35 plus years) and just happened to be here so I could ask him. I'm sure someone will tell you, you can paint a panel at a time which is true... you will just be doing it again the proper way if you want it to look like it's supposed to. When you screw up painting pearl, 100% of it needs to be removed to the base color, with fresh base color reapplied before you can do it again or the pearl will lay down in the sanding scratches instead of on top of the surface so think about it, apply some common sense and do it right the first time.

Why would you sand off all the clear with pearl when you could just sand it and re-apply the base color then the pearl? Sounds like more work then needs to be done. In any case doing things twice is not fun and makes your wallet thinner. If you are worried about the jams back mask the tape so it doesn't leave a sharp edge and then just take a terry cloth and some rubbing compound and clean the jams when you are done. Just my .02 |

Frank, I agree with the excessive removal of paint, but it needs to be done anyway, and some base colors may/maynot be able to apply on a certain type of clear, but naturally that is unique to your products used. I guess I should have stressed more importantly the REAL issue would be pearl loading up in sand scratches... No matter how much you remove/removed the base needs to be fresh for the pearl to be properly applied. The most important thing to me is not to get too many mils of paint on the car, and creating a "chip monster". That's one a very few think about, and a bummer besides. And there's no reason you can't jamb the car (door jambs, trunk & hood inners etc. with the color of the car) and maybe apply the pearl & clear to those when the car is shot making a cleaner job, and getting you a head start by doing the jambs first... JMHO

It depends on how the pearl is put on. If it is a color that has the pearl mixed in with it,it will not be hard to match. But if the pearl is dusted over the base color it is imposable to match. My dad just posted some pics of his orange pearl we just shot this week it is mixed in the color and will match every time you spray it . Its under pics by tkz69camaro.

The pearl is already in the base coat... Sorry I didn't mention that before. No pearl in the clear! Does the same apply? Thanks for all of the replies and info.
