Default Gopher Erradication

OK, saw the post on carpenter bees and was impressed. I have a gopher that is starting to irritate me. In the past, the smoke bombs have done the trick. I think this one has his own gas mask and is impervious to poisoned bait.

What's your tried and true method for getting rid of them? I was thinking about hooking up the pool vacuum hose to the exhaust pipe and letting the car idle for a half hour or so.

So I have to coax him out of his hole with music and then grab him?

.22's would just bring SWAT to my neighborhood after a 911 call "Shots fired" and the resulting paperwork would take too long!!

But for argument sake, what time of day is best? I could probably get away with a pellet gun.

I was going to say a case of beer and a friend with a .223 but you're not secluded enough. Best time of day is early morning.

In the past I've used this stuff called "Gopher go" and it worked ok but then a couple of outdoor cats started hanging around the house and they seem to like to kill gophers.

We have one in the backyard now that the cats haven't killed yet, in searching the web I though this would be a fun idea:

Quote:
Use your vehicle's exhaust to flood the gopher tunnel network with carbon monoxide. Find a way to couple your exhaust pipe to one end of a garden hose, and put the other end of the garden hose in a tunnel. Make sure that you cover any open holes with dirt to keep as much of the exhaust from leaking to the surface as possible. Let your vehicle idle for 15 - 30 minutes to flood the entire tunnel network. Repeat as necessary.

Would the resultant backpressure burn a valve? And to be perfectly honest, the '69 Camaro would be the car of choice as it puts out a lot more stuff than the 2002 PT Cruiser!!!!

No backpressure so to speak at idle, not enough heat. Three-fourths diameter hose would be fine.

I hear ya on doing a little .22 practice. would love to do it to a muskrat(s) in my canal/pond.

Thumbs up Re: Gopher Erradication

I use regular old "Road-Flares" (or Fussies to the law enforcement crowd )
Light it ('strike end while holding away from body' ) and stick it down on of their fresh early morning holes - watch for where smoke comes out of ground and go put them there also - you can stomp the little ba$tards as they exit the ground, all groggy and hung-over, or just apply a decent shovel 'wack' to them and they will be trash ready in no time...

They do sell fancy, new-fangled and expensive "Gopher-Gassers" at most home stores - but, they are just small road-flares

Evidently gophers are deadly affraid of flares or just love to come out to see where the accident was...

There is a guy out this way with a 'service' for local farmers that pumps a propane-oxgen mix into the burrows and then ignites it.
I've heard that deaf gophers come streaming out of the holes (little ears bleeding and all...) and then expire quite quickly right after the "boom"
I'll try to find the article from the paper a few year ago...

(edit) (edit again - oops, Zuma beat me to the link ) Wouldn’t you know it – the company was called RODENATOR – somewhere our ‘Governator’ is chuckling - http://www.gophernator.com/ -
found another reference to blasting them here - http://www.garden-counselor-lawn-car...r-blaster.html

Heck ya, you could even tweak the carb/timing and make it run like crap to dump lots of toxic gas!! Personally I would probably use a flexible hose like dryer hose but smaller diameter.

Hmm...I wonder if you could make it run rich enough so that you could light the exhaust gas in the tunnels on fire...how cool would that be?!?!? Blow them little SOB's into the neighbors yard!!!

Get a Macabe gopher trap, attach a chain to a 16" long piece of wood about 1" diameter. The wood stake must be driven in the ground to prevent your neighbors cat from running off with the gopher and your trap. I lost one last week even though I had the stake in the ground.

I bait the trap with lawn grass or lettuce and it works great. Other brands of traps are harder to set, the Macabe is pretty easy.

That is absolutely hysterical. I guess I could use propane gas from my Bernzomatic plumbing torch kit. Now I just have to figure out how to remote ignite it as I am fond of my eyebrows. Hmmmm, what about a spark plug, coil and a 12V battery?
