The instructions with my crate engine said to disconnect the power to the ecu (disconnecting only the ignition or injectors is not recommended), hook up an oil pressure gauge, then crank the engine using the starter for 10 seconds. Check for oil pressure. If pressure, you're done; if no pressure wait 30 seconds and then crank the engine using the starter for 10 seconds. Repeat the process until the gauge indicates oil pressure.

Once you've got pressure, reconnect the ecu, fire the engine and, if there are no unusual noises, let it run at about 1,000 rpm until it reaches normal operating temperature. You're done.

One of the two magazines, Hot Rod or Car Craft, have an article on LS priming.

They use a bucket, SBC/BBC oil pump attach to a cover, and two hoses going to the one of the oil filter ports on the block with pan drain going back to the bucket. Then use a drill on the oil pump to pump oil through the engine as normally done.

Jim,
NAPA sells an oil priming tank that works great on any engines that have oil pumps on the front of the crankshaft, It is a very simple tank that you fill with 5 qts of oil (or however much your engine holds) then you hook it up to the port where the oil pressure sending unit goes, put about 50lbs of air pressure on it with a compressor and open the valve. It forces the oil throughout the engine and you are done.

Typically it is easy to crank the engine over with the spark pulug removed. The lack of compression removes the load from the bearings.
Fill the oil filter first to limit how long you crank it & disconnect the ECM to prevent fuel from being injected & stray sparks from the coil packs.
