Anyone know how the idle is in a 400 sbc with this cam?? I just buttoned up the longblock with this cam and am wondering how the idle is...I hope it has a little bump to it.

My buddy had a 406 with the XE 274 and it definately has some chop to it. Of course you can play with the initial timing to change the "sound" of it a little. He was trying to maximize on track performance so he dialed in a lot of initial advance then limited mechanical to get a total of about 38 degree. The more timing it has at idle the "smoother" it will sound but it will run a lot better and have better throttle response.

It's great cam and you are going to be very happy with it.

Have fun!

That should be a fairly smooth cam for a 400+ci motor. I've got the 292H in my 412, and it's fairly rough, but not too bad...about 10" at idle. Your's should be a good street cam.

im running hooker ceramic coated headers, sorry i dont have a clue what they are its been so long since ive had em off (but they are comin out in a month for the new motor)

id like to say round port but dont hold me to it.

i was really happy witih the cam, and it performed flawlessly, and we are putting the cam in my fathers sb 400 for his street cruiser.

im stepping up to th 282xe but if i dont like it or i dont pick up any e.t. im stealing my old cam back

I bet it'd idle with almost no lope whatsoever. I know a guy running the XS282 (244/252 @ 050) behind a 400 and I'm so suprised at how smooth it idles. If you put some stock exhaust on his car I don't think you'd ever know it had any work done to it ...So if the 282 idles pretty smooth behind a 400 I can only imagine the 274 idling almost stock-like.

Solid cams are typically shorter on the seat than their hydraulic counterparts with similar .050 numbers so IMO it will probably idle smoother than the hydraulic FT version.

Should make a nice street engine with plenty of grunt.

Anybody know how that 294S would sound in a 400 and how much vacuum will it pull at idle?
