Default Rear drum brake

My cousin came over to help me with my axle seal problem. Well long story short, we found out that we did NOT need to disassemble the drum brakes in the rear.
But he disassembled one already.

He knows how to do drum brakes and I never learned this. I know that sounds stupid but I just don't know how to get this brake back together. Completely disassembled.

My cuz is now with his wife who went into labor. I won't be seeing him for some time now. You can say that due to his circumstances.......he's off the grid for awhile. LOL

Is there a step by step or something on how to do this, I can look at the other side but its completely disassembled and all over the floor. I don't know where to begin.

I'll be gone for the rest of the week but back this weekend. Any help is appreciated.

Use the other side, and the above picture as a guide. In the link below the tool with the black handle and the dog leg looking spring tool on the far right will make life much easier. You can find them individually for a couple bucks at your local auto parts store. The few bucks is well worth it.

http://autodax.com/catalog/pimages.php?prdid=277

Start with the shoes and hold down springs. Short lining shoe to the front. If you move the shoes out to the edge of the backing plate you should be able to put the hold down springs on with just your fingers, otherwise use that tool with the handle. Then install the E-brake parts and pull the shoes closer together. Next is the upper springs. Use the dog leg tool and it's a piece of cake. Without the tool a screwdriver will work but may take you a few extra tries... Next, hook the bottom of the shoes together with the adjuster spring. Clean and lightly lube the star adjuster threads. Pull the bottom of the shoes apart with a bit of muscle and install the adjuster with the star to the rear. Check to see how the drum fits. Adjust star wheel till there's a slight drag on the drum. Leave drums on and press the brake pedal a couple times. Readjust if necessary.

Back when I was like 17 y/o back about '64 or so, i did a front shoe job on my '57 and made the mistake of removing BOTH sides at the same time!

Onna the three Brothers that ran the DX Gas Station in town had to come out and show me how to do it and he told me then, just remove one side at a time.

And don't forget that brakes fit together like your hands do, mirror images, not one way, but faced front and rear.

I tried to get my wife's cousin to show me, he makes his living in automotive this stuff is very simple to him.
All he does is laugh at me and exclaim that he can't believe anyone wouldn't know this.

I don't mind not knowing as long as there is a path to learn it. Getting laughed at is never fun. I don't understand arrogance.

I'm going to attempt this job tomorrow, I have the day off.

Too late now but here is something I always do: I take pictures before (and during) I take anything apart. You don't know how many times that has saved my butt!

Good luck. The picture above is the driver's side. Pass side is the mirror image.
Just tell your cousin you can teach an old dog new tricks.

To save some time adjusting, you will have the adjuster, the star wheel at the bottom screwed in all the way to install the drum. Slide the drum on partially, notice the gap between the shoes and the drum, remove the drum, and adjust the star adjuster out to take up some slack.

Important to remember, left-hand threaded adjuster to driver side, right hand threaded adjuster to pass side.
